Baby oil works in the same way but it's more of a softer approach. Plus it doesn't smell... The graininess is also spread out to fill into the paper. I highly recommend it. Hello, Carol-Lynn. I am not Kristy, but the way she gets her pencils like that is to sharpen it completely with a pencil sharpener, and use the pencil at an angle. Using it at an angle makes it so that one side is flat and still doesn’t use the “pointy” side of the pencil.

A high quality pencil sharpener is great. I saved and splashed out for a Caran d’Ache sharpener and it DRAMATICALLY improved the points & sharpening experience. The trick is to use graphite pencils to clean the crud build up in the mechanism, then get any residual graphite off the colour pencils off before you use them. Treat the sharpener right, replacement blades aren’t cheap. The unit is worth the investment though, it really treats any pencils you get for their best.

I have a similer tequnec using a white coloursoft or watercolour pencil where i add a white layer onto my colouring and being soft pencils or even waxy the white pencil drags colour from the layers into the gaps filling them in and as i layer the colurs on top of each other it helps soften the stronger colours and blend without ever getting my paper wet, it may not give a painted affect but it makes my art far better and cleaner while taken out the overpower of more vivid or darker colours making them bright but more subtle, i've taken to calling it Colour Locking as it locks in the colour its also great for helping blending my soft pencils to from new shades example, the skintone on a persons face my indeed have 5-7-9 diffrent colours involed in layers of depth and shading, but after the white pencil locks the colours in you would tell other than seeing the detailed skintone results, though ofc your the true master here that why i've subed to learn your tips, that fur trick is very helpful

Kirsty, and audience : I have a question to ask of colour pencil artists. I have done a little myself with and without using solvent. What I want to know is Why Make Colour Pencil Look Like a Painting? Why not just use paint, watercolour or oil or other wet media. Or if pencil is the key, why not watercolour pencils? Don't misunderstand - I like colour pencils but I got to wondering the other day why I am making it look like something else? And I wondered if anybody else had thought about this. Also, I quite like the Drainting (!) above BEFORE the solvent. And I have seen some art stuff, admittedly a while ago, that was done with pencil strokes and was brilliant. Just curious. On another point about colour pencils, some of them are soluble with guest what : WATER !! I accidentally spilt some on a colouring book project and moved it all about, just like solvent - Ha! A serendipity. - and if very careful, gets rid of the shiny burnished look. The paper does have a bearing on it too. Doesn't work with all. Arteza are the best/worst, depending on your point of view. And I am definitely talking about Colour Pencils, not mistakenly using watercolour pencils.

Amazing art and editing! I feel bad mentioning, but I do have one minor criticism. The "s" sound in your speech is very prominent with headphones. This is sometimes referred to as sibilance. In post-production, there is actually a process simply called "de-essing." This could be accomplished with an equalizer by isolating the "s" range of frequencies and reducing it's volume, or depending on the program a de-esser plug-in may be available. I think most video editors are capable of this, but the free audio editing program Audacity has a de-esser. Some voices are more sibilant than others, so I do not mean any personal offense. Your voice is actually very pleasant and articulate btw.

Have you tried using the grid method? It’s drawing a grid on a reference picture and then drawing another grid to scale on your drawing paper. Then you can just draw whatever it is one section at a time. It’s really helped me with extra reference points so I can get the proportions right.

I NEVER knew that nail polish remover was a viable solvent to resource to if you don't have the branded solvents. Very neat to learn that and I'm gonna have to try it out someday. Beautiful piece but I don't view it underrated because art is art and there are myriads of ways to use one medium my uncle forced my little sister and I to try and draw with a pen to help us familiarize our comfort zone of using mediums we are not able to realize the errors aside from our talents/ awareness of what we were using and needless to say my little sister beat mine out of the park because I played it too safely when we used a pen. But I am thankful from that lesson because there's some things I can do with a pen that I otherwise could not do with other mediums and I learned a lot from different experiments I done on my free time that made me see quite a lot of do's and don't pretty fairly that some pieces some friends did made me cringe where they kept my pieces as a sample. I'm not at all a certified or licensed artist and I still learn from a whole lot of things that other artists do some which I can't get myself to even attempt to try to grow mileage on.

Hi you are good painting with colored pencils, and one question, what kind of solvent you use to blend the colors.

This is a great tutorial! Thanks for sharing the technique, especially because you can add so many details on top unlike burnishing method. I have solvent but just need to find the right amount to put on my brush because I’ve used too much in the past haha.

This is a much easier way to blend and get rid of grainy pencil coloring then what I do which is coloring super hard until it's waxy.
