My dad's best friend was a certified master mechanic and a Subaru specialist. After decades of turning wrenches, he was made the shop head at the largest volume car dealer in California back in the 80s and 90s. I used to bug the heck out of him, asking all kinds of questions like what car's the best and what car have you seen with the most mileage, etc. Most mileage was a Subaru brat. The owner was a traveling salesman. He literally brought the car in to have the driver's seat replaced several times before he ever had to do any major repairs. He had the lube done like clockwork. He replaced a clutch something like yearly. The transmission made it over 300,000 miles before needing to be rebuilt. The motor got close to 500,000 before it was rebuilt. I think he said it was a 78 model, and when he retired in 98, the Brat was over 1 Million miles. The salesman just didnt like change, I guess. lol

The oil pressure (80's cars didn't come stock with oil temperature gauges) ...oil pressure of the 1.6 liter boxer 4 cylinder in 1980's Subarus is steady as a brain surgeons hands. Those engines are more than bulletproof, they're freakin' bazooka proof. Example: I restored a 1988 Buick Skylark, while restoring it I drove a 1987 Subaru GL with the EXACT engine as in the '78 to '81 Brats. I couldn't financially justify putting my gorgeous, near mint, Buick Skylark on the road until the Subaru either became expensive to upkeep, or died on me... so I stopped changing the oil. 9 MONTHS I drove that car without touching the oil, spring time straight through until January, put almost 14,000 miles on it (I lived near the southeast tip of the Pine Barrens, NJ, 45 minutes to an hour drive to anywhere even half way not boondocks). Got to the point where gas station attendants would pull the dip stick out, and smoke would start coming out of the tube. One attendant asked me "what, are you trying to kill this thing? and I answered him "yes, as a matter of fact I am trying to kill this thing!" Long story long, it never died. We had an ice storm that January and I was driving after the storm, everything had a layer of ice on it that made everything look like it was made of glass, it was actually quite beautiful. Driving late one night, the roads were plowed and salted, but there were still some slick spots. I pulled up to a "T-junction" (for those who don't know that's a road that comes to a point where you can only go left or right, you cannot go straight). I accelerated, started turning left, but the car just kept going straight, I was sliding. The t-junction was at a point where straight was only a wooden fence and on the other side of the wooden fence was a water trap for a golf course. I proceeded to drive the car through the wooden fence, and into the water trap, all the while with the wheel turned all the way left and Me gently easing the brakes... After sinking the car in a lake, it would not start. I assessed the damage, and it was finally too expensive to repair and I got to put my Beautiful Navy Blue Buick Skylark Coupe, on the road. Loved that car, they're gorgeous for an American 80's car... Moral of the story is that those gauges aren't in the middle because they're the most important gauge, those engines very seldom have any issues with temperatures or pressures. They're in the middle because it was either put them there, or put separate gauges one all on the left and right sides of the tachometer and speedometer, and there was not enough room for that due of the design of the dash. ... That, and Subaru Brats have bulletproof engines, they really don't need any pressure or temperature gauges at all...

I used to ride in those cool seats in the back with the handles they had all the way from Los Angeles to Vegas chugging beer all the way.

And it had a CB radio at one time. The two holes above the fan control was where the microphone holder was located.

I saw a monster truck show about 20 years ago and part of the show was amateurs taking their 4x4 in a straight away with multiple mounds. The trucks taking the challenge were big 4x4s, but the brat beat them all

I had a brat. If you drove it in sand, you could watch the temp gauge go up in real time. Underpowered, undercooled, and needed head gaskets fairly often :) Good news was two guys could pull the engine by hand... ;)

Way back in 1983 ish…a Subaru Brat pulled out my stuck 1950 Chevy 3100 somehow from a very soft backyard…the brat weighed well less than the truck…I was impressed…..

I remember them from when I was a young adult. My problem was the bed wasn't that big. I got a Dodge D50 sport instead.

I called it immediately! And I've only seen one in my entire life! The spare tire was mounted on top of the engine.🤣🤣🤣

I think they came with seats in the bed that faced the rear too, which is really cool. Just a cool ride.

I KNEW IT! That was my first vehicle. Looked like a little truck. I loved that thing. Yes, it could 4 wheel drive with the best of them & haul ass too. I would buy it again if they brought it back.
