Take two. I had a great reply but You Tube ate it! First, I love a good recurve on a blade. Yes, it is harder to sharpen but it really makes it easier to control some push cuts and like you said, you have a little more belly up front that comes in handy. Youn mentioned while hunting. I find it useful in food preparation, especially when cutting large chunks of raw meat. Second clip points just look good and they definitely give you a nice point for piercing and aid in slicing. They can also aid in balancing the knife and give you a purchase point on the spine of the knife. Yes it does mean you have a weaker blade tip. Use your knife correctly. Thanks for the explanation of what you mean by drop point. I would have considered that knife a spear point. Long ago, that is what Victorinox called that style of blade. I never thought about both edges of the point needing to be sharp to be considered a spear point. There is reason Victorinox uses that style of blade. It is just an all around useful blade shape. I think you and I could spend an entire night in a bar ragging on Wharncliffe blades. Yes it is a useful blade and I love them when they are put on the right knife. But these days, knife companies call anything and everything they make a Wharncliffe blade. I love it on my Case Desk Knife and also on my Seahorse whittler. It’s a useful blade for the intended task. But it doesn’t need to be everywhere As for sheepfoot blades. They are like hawkbills. They make an excellent secondary blade on some knives but otherwise they belong on the purpose built knives where they belong (garden knives, rope knives, electrician knives. A good sheepfoot blade on a marlinspike knife makes a lot of sense. If you’re talking about a knife that just has sharp blades, then I agree with you about the stockman being an excellent all-around carry. But it doesn’t hold a candle to a Swiss Army knife with a saw blade and a pair of scissors. I’d prefer a Stockman with a punch and small flathead screwdriver and maybe even a can opener instead of the spay and sheep foot. Wait, that’s a scout knife. And with that said, I’m still going to carry my large toothpick. Looking forward to the Fixed blades. I’m going to say clip blade and drop point. But I really dig a good stiletto or bayonet blade. Not practical but cool.

so much good sense and relevant knowedge I was impressed even when my personal opinion differed. His consideration of effective maintenance as a major factor is new to me, but I agree. I reckon the best practical advantage in warncliff and sheepsfoot is the likelihood theywill be fit for their role, sharp and undamaged, regardless of the owner's skills.

As a mushroom hunter, I have to give a shout out to a good hawkbill folder. For personal day to day tasks, I find myself liking and using either a Wharncliffe or clip point style blade. I hope you highlight the Nessmuk and Tanto when you cover fixed blades. Two of my favorites.

I still carry a medium case stockman. Kind of like a SAK, people tend to not blink at it if I have to pull it out for something at work or in public. Not that I really care what people think if I pull out another knife, but they are very classy and infinitely useful. As for my favorite blade shape, I can’t choose, I’m kind of partial to the sheepsfoot/modified sheepsfoot/modified cleaver (whatever they call it). I like the look of it and, for most of what I do, I find it very easy to control and a little less shabby when I don’t want to puncture something. Having said that, I did manage to drive my Honey Badger wharncleaver into my forearm (made a dumb mistake) so I can attest that it can puncture if it really wants to. Great video!

I guess I'm more function over form type a person. I haven't found anything other than meat processing that which a belly is superior. I've found that Wharncliff and talon shapped/hawkbill blades handle all general daily task much better and you never have to worry about those blades slipped like those with a belly. Those blades may not have the attractive curves of the other knives, but their great utility makes them attractive to me.

Outside of specialized cutting tasks or specific environments, it mostly comes down to subjective preference. For the types of cuts I do at work, a wharncliffe a tends to be the most useful shape for me. A drop point with a low tip also works well too in my common cutting tasks.
