Masterpiece. The version mentioned by Eric is also magnificent, sung by two singers... they use a virginal, that gives it the final touch.

Got this on the radio around 1998 but never knew who who was singing it. Also the recording I have is old and a copy of a copy which is not so good. But, hey! Now I found this fantastic video of a great song and singer. Thanks. David Davies 11 Nov 2012.

Early music peeps: If you ever come across an old LP (‘72!) called The leaves be greene, by an early lineup of The Consort of Musicke (four instrumentalists plus guest vocalist Martyn Hill)… don’t hesitate! Great version of Watkins Ale, plus three different settings of the title song, an irresistible ear worm, btw (tenor, 2 lutes, viols), and a bunch of other delightful consort pieces.

Certainly, it was performed and recorded by "The New London Consort" at the Temple Church in London in 1992. The arrangement and direction were by "Philip Pickett" and the soprano was "Catherine Bott". The original CD was produced by "Linn Records" in 1993

@witchcraftlord if you had actually read the source I posted you would see that it directly dicusses the use of watkins ale as a euphemism during the time period.

Her pure 'white' voice sounds strikingly like the one on the Musicians and the Globe recordings with Sir Philip Pickett in the 90s...leading me to believe that that is the recording it's from. Check it out and compare for yourself!

@witchcraftlord if you listen to the lyrics the girl becomes pregnant and has a child at the end of the song Till thrice three months were gone and passed. This maiden then fell very sick. Her maidenhead began to kick. Her color waxed wan and pale, With taking much of Watkins ale. ....

Anna It’s a tough one. The singer in that version has a more honeyed voice but this arrangement is outstanding with more drive and clarity and that is more true to my imagination of an original version.

What is the toast to which she refers? That is the only euphemism that I don’t understand.
@Salamon2

The clean side of my mind: Perhaps flattery or flirting in general--since a toast would be what happens before one "drinks" and therefore the most danger is to be found in flirting as that leads to drinking too much "Watkins Ale"? Or perhaps to get the dirtier side of my mind involved: perhaps an euphemism for oral sex? And the danger of transmitted sexual disease? Though perhaps it's both and none--a good euphemism should be mercurial and hard to pin down.

Great song, except “her maydenhead” doesn’t begin “to kicke” in that one IIRC. A maid “afraid to die a mayd” really had to take her chances back then…

I put the video together nearly 10 years ago, so my memory is a little hazy. However, I am reasonably confident that it was a publicity shot of Natalie Dormer from the TV series The Tudors 2007-2010, she played Anne Boleyn. As for the word "Sithed", I have just watched the video again and the actual word is "Sighed". Hope this helps.

I am happy with who my I am. I'm also sorry that you feel the need to resort to insulting people and cussing at them when the try to hold a reasonable polite discussion with you.

These songs are always done with a small orchestra and reverbed all to hell as though this song was performed in a cathedral. A song like this would've been performed in a pub. It's too proper. Am I right? This isn't how anyone would have heard the song at the time. I'd like to hear the scaled down version.

I find that there is no need for you to be rude. If would like to hold a civil debate with evidence to support your side of the argument I am more then willing. As far as instruments go I play piano, flute, guitar, and have played harpsichord as well as organ. I find that instruments you play have no bearing on your ability to interpet nor knowledge of Renaissance music.
