This bloke has got the whole clutch thing the wrong way around, the dogs on the gears don't care about the clutch, what they care about is the torque on them that is pushing the male dog against the side of the female hole. If you back off the throttle so that you are on a trailing throttle with it just cracked open as you change gear then there is no side load on the dogs and it will change gear with ease. This is much harder to do on a downshift as the engine is acting as a brake (even a 2 stroke will do this) and the engine braking is placing side load on the dogs. If you change gear with load on the dogs the sharp square edges of the dog gets rounded off so they end up slipping past each other, when this happens the selector forks get bent which means that the dogs no longer fully overlap each other so they are even more likely to slip.

when you're on a slippery, hard-pack surface if you downshift too early or downshift twice then yes, but otherwise it's not a problem, your weight should be over the rear when you're decelerating anyway which should help prevent the rear wheel skidding.

Idiots. Idiots everywhere learn how the sequential gearbox works and how to torque is transmitted through the gearbox and come tell me that i can't shift without clutch. Sequential gearbox was created in the 19th century and is still being used, designed to be used without clutch. I have rebuilt many gearboxes and i can safely say that shifting without clutch is not gonna wear it off.

I have YZ250 2 stroke. Its fully ported, high compression ratio, fatty pipe, bored carb, well tuned, race tech suspension valving and springs...all the best stuff. Clutch shifting is just wrong, for so many reasons, including the bike balance and traction. I also spoke to 2 former Pro Supercross racers whom I ride with, and they have never heard of using the clutch for shifting. Dirt bike transmissions are built to not use the clutch - thats how they are designed. Use the clutch for traction control, but not shifting. To shift without the clutch, just "twitch" the throttle off for a micro second. This unloads the transmission and the bike will smoothly and effortlessly click into the next gear. Downshifting is done under braking thus the transmission is already unloaded. This "use the clutch for shifting rhetoric is just bad advice.

Coming from street to dirt I always used the clutch to shift. Recently stopped using it and it is much easier and faster without using it. And as a technician you are correct it will not harm the transmission at all.

When I try to downshift on my DRZ400SM without the clutch, there's a ton of force keeping me from pressing the shift lever. I could blip the throttle to get rid of that force, but that means adding throttle while trying to stop AKA it's slower. I use my brakes to stop the bike, not the engine. There's literally no advantage to downshifting without the clutch. When I was a beginner on quads, I wouldn't use the clutch to shift. People act like clutchless shifting is an advanced technique but it's natural for newbies. In reality you have no control over the rear tire speed when you just dump gears without the clutch. Slipping the clutch on downshifts to control rear wheel speed, is the advanced technique.

You want to always use your clutch downshifting unless you can rev match perfectly.... you can upshift without touching the clutch and it won’t damage anything as long as you LAY OFF THE THROTTLE, when you are not applying throttle, there is no load on the motor, so you can safely do it...

You can move your shift lever up by rotating it one notch on the shaft. Just make sure it doesn't run into the chain at the front sprocket when you do upshift. It won't be long and you'll want to move it back down. And practice practice practice.

You mad bro ?!?? I'm would never down shift without clutch , try it it's not nice 😂 up shifting without clutch is totally fine , if anything using your clutch while shifting up will wear out the plates more than not using it !! Also the dirtbike gear boxes aren't anything special your gear dogs are always hitting each other if you shift with or without the clutch so I doesn't matter , if your a Sunday rider , then use the clutch as it's just a nice feeling, if you wanna race then ditch using the clutch for up shifting and when you down shift using the clutch for coners only feather it so you have the bitting point and let it out slow to prevent wear on the plates , that's my view !

haha definitely not. if your fast and you get lazy on the clutch with upshifts the dogs will be fucked in no time and it will start popping out of gear under load. power shifting full throttle just touching the clutch makes a huge difference and the clutch plates can handle it no problem. without clutched upshifts i normally loose 3rd gear in 30 ish hours. clutched upshifts and i have had no issues at all

totally disagree about using clutch for upshift. A very slight release "twitch" of the throttle unloads gearbox and enables a smooth effortless upshift & its a quicker shift then pulling and releasing clutch lever. It also gives more consistant power to rear wheel thus keeping bike balanced. Clutch should be used as a traction control device on corner exit and off starts.

Well this is the first time I've heard someone advising against clutchless upshifts and recommending cluthcless downshifts. People should learn to use the clutch for ALL shifting, up and down, and work on clutch control.... until you know your bike in side and out then use the clutch. Plus, this is clearly talking about track riding, street, even on dirtbikes/supermoto's i'd recommend using a clutch. On a track you generally have space to come off the bike, on the road is a different ballgame. I've always clutched when shifting, not doing it just seems unatural, like slamming into gear in a car (which is doable lol), then i mostly street/trail ride so it's probably not applicable to me.

Speed Upshift, hold it wide open n flick the clutch lever like it's a ladies pleasure button. Downshift clutch no clutch just tap shifter like tap dancing. Works like a charm for me

Can someone explain me how downshifting without clutch works? I'm riding Honda CB600 Hornet (I don't have any experience with dirt bikes but I'm planning to change it in the future) and i can't even imagine to downshift like that. Please I'm curious ;)

I’ve never had a problem shifting until I bought a 2018 husqvarna te300, it’s either too high or too low I can’t get it just right, I changed my shift lever a few times and even changed my boots to a thinner toe boot but for some reason can’t get it fight

dirtbikes have a crash gearbox so you dont need to use clutch and it wont do anything to the bike road bikes are different you have to shift with the clutch unless you have a quick shifter but you need no clutch with dirtbikes to shift

Just got some new boots and I can't feel my shifter at all. Going to have to try to break them in if that doesn't work get rid of them.

these are sequential gearboxes, how come all of the shifter kart riders and racecar drivers, who also have sequential transmissions never really bother with the clutch unless they're starting from a stop?

i have never had an issue with my transmission or anything and i never have used the clutch to shift. He is correct in what he says but idk i never have missed gears or had issues with it, i suppose its personal preference.

I have a size 14 or 15 shoe and i find it extremely hard to shift. Is it possible that i may need a longer shift lever if possible because even my friends bikes are easier to shift with longer levers

I have size 15 boots and all you got to do is ride at the balls of your feet and adjust the gear lever a bit over the height of the peg to be able to slide the boot underneath it. I ride a 500 EXC for dirt riding.

It's really opinion and preference. I always use the clutch shifting up and down. What I feel, it's good for the bike but so inefficient as your trying to go fast and so in engrained in your mind. I need to start experimenting shifting up clutch less or hydraulic clutch.

Yeah I found its good to use the clutch even a little bit its insurance of solid shift I have raced and not used it,but if the clutch is brand new,and your budget unlimited,ok,its good to always use a little just be safe, your fingers should be there anyway,I learned eventually when I got serious about racing.Believe I could go out and ride without it but you'll be smoother with it and smoother useally means faster.track conditions will vary too making clutch use more important than when traction and the track is just perfect...but those days are not all the time, thanks Gary...

The dirt bike Channel says not to use the clutch. It's a constant mesh transmission. Shifting without the clutch will not hurt it at all. Downshifting without the clutch might be a little hard on them. I only use the clutch to start off and to downshift. I almost always rev-match when I downshift.

If you do not use your clutch you risk blowing your gear box apart! you have to use it!

my biggest issue is keeping a finger on the clutch it is very hard to break that habbit. the other thing is when I try and keep a finger on the lever always contact my other fingers when I pull it in and can't stand that

Has anyone here consulted the manufacturer on clutch use and whether using it or not using it causes damage ?

How practical are the MX boots for touring on highways with 10-15% riding on trails/off -roading? I ride a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and thinking on purchasing Gaerne Fastback boots than a adv/touring boot like a Dakar or Sidi Adv 2. Your thoughts?
