It sounds like it's about to go back in time or something

Hear the generator labour when the arcs make it across the motor's brushes :-) Great video!

No i just put power directly to each brush leaving the stator unpowered.

Alright, but there should be wires going from the brush holder into the stator winding. It can't rotate if the static field isn't magnetized whatsoever, you know.

@BenHutchinson321 What you heard was a home-made DC generator, a frontload washer motor was belt driving a treadmill motor.

Interesting noises in that burn out.

There aren't.. as you can see the blue and orange wires are cut and not wired to anything and they are for the stator. I read somewhere that when you power a motor this way that the motor self-excites and that's where the magnetic field is coming from.

Most often the motors will be able to start itself when powered this way, however there are some that won't, not sure why that is... And the motors will usually start to spin at a fairly low voltage 30~50v .

Bypassing the stator completely? What do you mean? Did you put permanent magnets in the stator or something? Very cool experiment!

Ahh self excitation. Really? That's very interesting, you know. But do you have to feed it with a higher voltage than it's designed for,in order to gain that self excitation? And that is also the reason you have to start it by hand, eh?

What's the sound in the background? You were running another motor?

The smell wasn't too bad on this one because it didn't do much smoking.
