Snapped cap studs is a manufacturing error, most likely over-torqued in assembly causing excess wear and tension leading to them breaking.
@HalfdeadRider

Not likely as they have a set torque by computers, the mechanics can not over tighten them. It's most likely an unfortunate case of one just having a weak spot from when 'it' was made, undetectable weak spots in components are the main cause of failure in new engines, it only takes one small component to cause major damage.

This info was from some guys on the zx6r forum. Zx6r forum: “Yes doing high rpm wheelies can cause the motor to blow , as i explained in a previous post the crank case vent tube is routed to the air box from the back of the engine so when the bike is in a wheelie oil can get forced into the air box .. if you get enough oil in the air box it gets sucked into the combustion chamber via the throttle bodies and since oil doesnt compress the piston hits the oil like a brick wall which in turn bends or breaks the connecting rod then the crank sends it out the front of the engine case .. almost all stunt riders that run a 636 reroute the crank case vent tube around the air box and then disable the air valve on top of the valve cover so any oil that gets pushed out of the crank case simply gets pushed out the exhaust doing no harm to the motor ..”

Hey, love your channel. Big kawi fan myself. Been a motorcycle mechanic for 12+ years now. I have to point the finger at the oil filter there, have heard of problems with "that brand" of oil filter. Faulty pressure regulators within the filter being the issue. Not that they will ever admit to it. Personally I have used champion oil filters for years and never had an issue with them. Also suspect you using some or other full synthetic oil judging by the colour, would rather use a good quality mineral oil with frequent changes, much better protection. Hope you find a good motor soon!

I don’t know much on bikes but I would lean towards the oil filter considering you just did an oil change. I have personally almost blew up a car motor because I didn’t research on the filter and later found out that the filter doesn’t seal right on the car and slowly leaks out when the motor and oil gets hot
@vicariousclouds2340
4 жыл бұрын
Simply, engines need break in periods. Some longer than others. I personally like 5k miles. 10k for cars before you can start really abusing. Your pistons need to "cut" there own grooves in the cylinders. Rings need time to properly stretch and set. Bearing etc need time to work there way and cut there own grooves as well. If you go and romp on it to early, a piston can kick sideways and launch. Or a bearing went bad and let the rod go aswell. Theres plenty of reasons why. You were being rather rough on a 1-2k mile motor. Thats just my take.
@zackmorton8421
4 жыл бұрын
I work for a Kawi dealer and stunt a 13 so two things it could be: 1 is the break in period, needs to be broken in GENTLY for the first 1000ish miles. 2 is the oil pan on the new gens isn’t good for wheelies you need the pickup/pan mods or else you’ll starve your motor of oil and spin a bearing or throw a rod

I'd pull the other 3 rod caps off and look for signs of oil starvation. If all the bearings looked fucked then I'd say the filter is at fault. But if they all look good it was an engine assembly issue. I have heard horror stories from people using k&n filters but ran them for years on my r6 and Ducati without any issues. For reference, I'm not motorcycle mechanic, however I am a diesel and gas mechanic. I think it was a combination of problems starting with the manufacturer, the second and third I believe are directly correlated. Engines are designed to sit upright, so the constant wheelies starve the engine of oil, however if the new oil filter has a higher micron and less flow rating it can further that problem and completely starve the engine of oil. Just my thoughts, take it with a grain of salt.

Sometimes it’s the oil itself, I’m a big believer that oils other than the manufacturers oils aren’t made for the engines tolerances inside the motor. You would be suprised in the amount of testing manufacturers do for making their oils perfect for their engines. If kawi makes oil at the weight you run, use it. All I run in my yz450 is yamalube and have never had issues, but just like in your situation, I once used Lucas oil in a pinch and 18 hours later I threw a rod bearing. Hope you read this and keep it in mind !

91-95 zx7 j/k/l/m motors and 94-97 zx9 b motors have a similar issue. The oil pump pushes too much oil to the top of engine causing oil starvation and usually #3 conrod failure. A simple remedy is to overfill the engine until the sight glass is almost full. Not sure if that's the exact cause of your failure. However, I do question how much time the bike spent upright while you were stunting contributed to the failure.

Could it have been from the oil pickup tube location? When you're pulling wheelies all day, it can starve the oil pump causing excessive wear to crank bearings etc. I know stock groms certainly have this issue. Aftermarket sources sell pump tube relocation kits so that when you're vertical, the oil that goes to the back of the motor still feeds the oil pump.

My best guess is you after that cold start the engine was starved of oil during the mega dank nooner, from what I can see on diagrams most oil pumps and pickup tubes on sport bikes are located towards the front of the pan. The cold oil being forced to the back of the pan along with an engine that probably isn't fully broken in means you're gonna have a bad time. @serialgolfer
2 жыл бұрын
That looks almost certainly like oil starvation. I see you put a baffle in the sump but the problem is the hole for the baffle is at the front so the oil has to come up to the hole at the front when it flows back down after being pumped in the engine, which when you’re doing a wheelie is a high point causing moments of oil starvation when the pickup sucks what is at the bottom and waits for the drain back to come down and cover the pickup. If you try to compensate by filling it extra high the crank will just but into the oil and Aerate that oil anyway and make it useless. Judging by the black colour of the rod the bearing spun and it got very hot and eventually failed. You can hear that in the video where it very quickly develops a rod knock and then comes out the case.

What type of break in did you give it and what oil did you use? The only newer Kawi I’ve seen window the block like that was one that an owner started flogging from the moment he got it with no type of break in and he broke a ringland on cyl 3 piston. I don’t think this was a factor for him, but I also recommend running conventional Dino oil for the first few thousand miles to let everything wear in properly as full synthetics are generally too slick for a brand new engine to properly seat rings and properly run in.

I’m wondering if your ecu reflash leaned the bike out too much and the connecting rod said fawk this . Could be a manufacturer’s defect ? Could be a spung bearing . Could be the oil filter . Could be all kinds of things . I just hope my 2020 zx6r doesn’t do that . Best of luck homie .

The dark discolouration of the cap points means it got hot.. kinda seems like oil starvation. I’d be curious to see if any pistons started to grab and if the crank has the same discolouration 👍🏼

Check with kawi, you’d be surprised what they cover even after the warranty is expired. They stand by their product and they know that a 1200 mile engine shouldn’t have failure like that.

Aiden Lothian so don’t try because someone might say no? Why not try? Are you just that kind of bitch that you’re afraid to ask out of fear of rejection? I’d hate to know what your live life is like... Jesus. He can at least try or he can do nothing. You sound like more of a do nothing kind of person. Sad, but from reading your comment, it’s kinda expected.

genuine opinion. the rod cap being unbolted like that and not being broken means that the bolts gave up. kawi should def own up on over tightening those bolts. its obviously the original cause of failure. crank failure is a possibility too. but the bolts having micro fractures in them is more likely..

Could be a timing issue or something else that caused the air fuel mixture to ignite before top dead center and blew apart the connecting rod. Reminds me of early direct inject turbo cars blowing up several years ago when they just started becoming popular. There was an issue called low speed pre-ignition that was causing the air fuel mixture to detonate before TDC.

Don't feel bad, some of the most expensive race cars with less than 500 mi blow up too, as in -- $20k motor for a NASCAR motor or $350k in F1 due to a 3 dollar bolt fail & no warranty either.

Honestly in my experience with new engine blowing up is due to the engine being built wrong. as for the oil filter if something was wrong with it usually the filter bypass will open up and alow oil flow

That oil pump working properly? Looks like some oil starvation. It spin a bearing? Check the piston walls for scaring. That's a good sign of oil starvation.

I know the track does not allow any bike to run k&n oil filters. Seen a lot of bikes blow with those filters always stick to stock if available.

My guess, since the rod end cap was sitting in the pan, is that it was put together wrong and the bolts back out out of the rod end cap. That would also explain why it started knocking and then got worse. It was knocking cuz the crank was movin around inside the rod and then when the cap gave out it shot the upper side of the rod through the block

It was the filter for sure. I have heard many stories about brand new bikes blowing up from K&N filters.

Oil starvation. I know in dirtbikes if you wheelied too long and a lot all the oil would go to the back and not properly lubricate the crank. Don't know if this is the reason but my guess.

I'll start this off by saying I'm a car guy, I dont know much about bikes or more specifically their oiling. But I've always wondered if wheelies starve bikes for oil? No way those taillight draggers are good for them.

Statistically speaking every motor has the probability to throw a rod at any moment and it grows exponentially with wear but it’s still possible with a brand new motor. And working in manufacturing I know that when it comes to motors if something isn’t heat treated properly it’s weakened significantly and can cause it to blow and if something small like a bolt isn’t heat treated properly it will break without much stress. Or if the break in process isn’t done properly then it will definitely drive the probability of a failure up a lot

I don't even have a guess about that hole, that's pretty crazy. It's similar to when someone turbos a car and it isn't tuned correctly and the pressure just blows the engine up leaving a gaping hole like that. Bike ever tuned or anything?
