The motorcycle accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. would like to congratulate Davian Peterson for winning our 2018-2019 video scholarship contest. Davian put together a terrific video discussing safety issues and laws for motorcyclists, including such topics as helmet use and lane splitting.
Our law firm put out the challenge to college and law students across the country to create a video discussing motorcycle laws in his or her area and whether those laws needed to be changed or improved. Applicants were also asked to discuss technology and/or products that are available but not widely used to increase safety on the roads for motorcyclists.
We received good videos from several students, but Davian went above and beyond the call. He covered all requested topics and put together a high quality project, which even included drone footage of him riding on the open road.
Lane splitting is when a motorcyclist drives between lanes of cars in traffic. This practice can be very dangerous, as a vehicle could change lanes unexpectedly, causing an accident. This practice is illegal in all states except for California.
As for helmet laws, 19 states now require all riders to wear them, but 3 states (including Illinois) still somehow do not require helmets.
