Very informative. White sludge on the inside of the oil filler cap CAN be from condensation if the van is only used for short runs, but I agree, it can be a sign of a blowing head gasket which is not unusual on old diesel engines that are pushed hard to run heavy camper vans up hills and on motorways. If you see white sludge, insist on a compression test which can also reveal a blowing head gasket.
