No! Speed is how fast a motor rotates, NOT how fast it performs its work. POWER is how fast work is performed, and a spinning motor does no work until it is connected to a load. Also, 1055 Joules do NOT equal one horsepower, because a Joule is a measure of energy, not power. Energy is what is expended to do work, while power is the rate at which the energy is expended. One Watt (of power) expended for one second is equal to (the energy of) one Joule. 746 Watts equal one horsepower.

Not sure why people can't get basic things right... 1. Torque is not a special kind of work. Torque does not even cause work at all before it involves motion. 2. Torque can be measured in lb-ft (pound foot) but that involves "pound force" and not "pound weight". Only if you assume standard gravity can you say that an object of 1 pound at 1 foot of arm will make 1 foot pound of torque. E.g. on the moon, you would have a surprise using such analogy. 3. One horsepower is not 1,055 Joules. Rather it is approx. 746 Joules per second. 4. "More horsepower is needed to produce the same amount of torque more quickly"...nonsense, torque is not a measure per time but simply a static measure of twisting force.

You are correct. There is a big mistake about friction forces too starting at 4:45.

About your #4. It seems like you haven´t understand this part correctly. Torque is not a measure per time, that part is correct, but power it is, so yes, more horsepower is needed to produce the same amount of torque more quickly.
@zukaka84
7 жыл бұрын
You are so wrong about friction because you are confusing sliding and static ones. At 4:45 you start to explain sliding friction force and its coefficient. But then at 6:03 you have the static friction force which moves the barrel, so (μ x Weight) is no longer correct. Indeed, this static friction causes the barrel to move unlike the sliding friction which always tries to stop the object. Then same happens at 8:11 for an inclined surface. (Weight x μ x CosA) is a sliding friction which you have to overcome. But at 8:43 it is again the static friction which moves the barrel and is NOT equal to (Weight x μ x CosA), it equals to (Wight x SinA). It even has the direction of the motion unlike the sliding friction force which is opposite of the motion.

In common parlance pound-force feet (lbf-ft or lb-ft) is frequently conflated with foot-pounds (ft-lb); however, as a tutor of college mathematics and physics, I would damn near prick-slap anyone of my STEM tutees for getting those confused ;) The English measure for work is ft-lb, not lb-ft. It is the dot product of force and distance; it is a scalar. On the other hand, the English measure of torque, the rotational analog for force, is lb-ft. It is the cross-product of distance and force; it is a vector. Finally, for a clear and accurate explanation, view, "Why doesn't torque have the units of joules?" on the "Logically"-channel.

I want to pull caravan. Someone told me that we need car with a lot of torque. I think he's wrong, couse we need power to pull this caravan couse Power makes acceleration. Which vehicle pulls stronger? vehicle A with constant 2000 rpm with 500Nm or vehicle B with constant 13000 rpm with 100Nm? In my opinion Vehicle B couse it has more power (185hp) than vehicle A (142hp) I know 13000rpm is irrational and better is to have car with a lot of low rpm power. But in this example vehicle B pulls stronger Am I right?

0:02 "...that determine the type of *work* a motor can produce" I get that you're trying to use "work" to mean "type of measurable output", but that use doesn't belong in this video.You're about to talk about mechanical work. 0:07 "speed is defined as how fast the motor performs its work" Nope. That's power... which you're also about to talk about. Speed would just be defined as the rate of rotation. 0:33 "...the work is called torque. Torque is a special type of work..." Work is NEVER called torque. Torque is NOT work! Torque is angular force, or more intuitively, "rotational force".

@@yosef-yosef9414 The twisting force (torque) produced by a stalled (not turning) electric motor is a direct function of how much total current is flowing around each pole - so thats the current flowing in the wire times the number of wraps that wire makes arount the pole. 1 amp through a wire with 100 turns would give the same torqe as 10 amps through a wire with 10 turns. This current will flow according to ohms law (V=I×R). As the motor turns faster, back EMF is generated, which you can think of as backwards voltage. It's as though the supply voltage were reduced, reducing the current that flows and thus, the torque produced. By re-winding the motor with thicker wire two things probably happened. 1) You reduced the resistance of each coil. 2) You reduced the number of turns on each coil. These cause several changes. Fewer turns means two things: back emf is weak and so no-load speed is high. Also more current will need to flow through the wire to create the same torque. Well the lower resistance should cause more current through the wire, but since you are probably powering the motor with a battery, the battery may be reaching limits of how much current it can provide (bateries have "internal resistance") Basically you moved the rpm for best efficiency way higher, making it more inefficient when stalled or turning slow. The motor you have now could maybe perform the same as before if it was mated to a much higher ratio gearbox. I hope this is making some sense.
