The 3800 is arguably the best engine GM ever made.

Everyone remembers things differently, but these seemed like exceptionally good days for GM, they'd recovered (and were still on the upswing) from the quality issues of the 80s. The 3800 was a great engine for sure, didn't have a Buick, but two Bonnevilles, one supercharged, one N/A, good memories. Even if it was an older design, you wouldn't have known it to drive it.

Considering the W platform was a financial disaster for GM costing $7 billion to develop and expecting to produce 1,750,000 a year which it never did which caused a loss of $2000 per car built, combine that with the Roger Smith era mismanagement and GM came really close to bankruptcy 1992/93

This was my first car, same year, even the same color, but it was a base model with lovely burgundy velour bench seat, still had the great 3.8 V6 though. Parents bought it new in 1990. It was a very reliable, comfortable, rattle free, well made car. Thing was it turned into a pumpkin when I got it around 2001, paint started to fall off it, was in the shop every couple months, left me walking 2 or 3 times. But it probably had close to 200k miles(odometer broke at 94k back around 1996). Not 90's Honda/Toyota/Nissan levels of durability, but a lot better than Detroit crap from the 70's/80's.

I owned a 1997 1/2 Regal. Kept it for over 12 years. The 3800 series 2 engine was and is the best V6 GM made!

I bought one of these and returned it. There is a 1/4mi driveway where I worked at the time. I floored it and was at 80+ before having to brake. I returned it 2 days later feeling like I would die driving it… felt like I was not in control at all. Bought a Camaro, and loved driving it because it did what I wanted, when I wanted it… no wishy-washy steering and suspension.

This was the best of the GM-10 bunch - enough low-end torque to move briskly without thrashy engine noises, a relatively smooth ride, and plenty agile. The 3800 is what it should've come out with in 1988; the 2.8L V6 was overwhelmed even with the 4-speed auto and was a decided downgrade from the RWD A-bodies despite lighter weight.

Yes I agree. The 60deg V6s were decent engines but not appropriate for B/O/P use in these larger cars

such great cars. I've seen quite a few come through the shop with over 200k and they still had a very smooth ride and a very quiet interior. my wife's 94 gran sport has 220k on it and after 7 years and 130k miles and it has never gave us a problem and never left us stranded! these were the last few years of outstanding buick reliability and quality.

Interesting that my base 1994 Regal Custom with the same 170 hp, 220 ft lbs of torque 3800 did a 16.497 @ 83.31 mph at NJ's Atco Dragway. The car at the time had over 90K miles on it.

There is no doubt the Series I 3800 is one of the best motors out there. It's just a shame it was usually put in ugly cars. One of the few good ones is the Regal coupe. The sedan is like a granny's car.

Ya'll weigh in here, but I feel like they were saying (without saying it) that GM's populated brand/platform sharing was starting to wear thin by this point.

gotta thank the Carter administration for that lol. So much for making buckling up automatic, pretty much everyone treated them as manual belts, but they were cheaper than airbags, and many cars from the late 80s and early 90s had them.
