Yup- those trucks are ugly, terribly designed pieces of crap. That is exactly how I would describe the 97-02 light duty ford’s. The 03-09 trucks are slightly less ugly and even more terribly designed. If it wasn’t for the 7.3 powerstroke in the super duty chassis I would say that ford hasn’t made a good pickup truck since 1996.

I'll still see my fair share of these on the road today. Typically rusted out and with hundreds of thousands of miles but still going strong. Even though this will never happen again but I enjoy the smell of older diesel pickups. Back in the 2000s when diesels were becoming more popular I would always be reminded of their presence with their strong diesel fumes and loud engine idles. Nowadays diesels run so efficiently and quietly and they don't smell anymore. I'm sure it's not healthy to smell that anyway but it gives that little bit of nostalgia.

That’s one thing i miss about the early 2000’s. I remember seeing ambulances all the time and they all had that distinctive 7.3 powerstroke rattle. Anytime I hear an old 7.3 that’s what they remind me of. That and the smell. Diesels just don’t have that smell anymore.

These trucks are starting to become a rarity here in Upstate NY, which us tragic because these are probably one of the greatest Ford trucks ever built. The 2V 5.4's and 6.8's have had their struggles but have proved to be mostly great engines, and the 7.3 Diesel isn't even in question. I grew up in a 2012 F150 and a 2021, and a farmer I worked for had one of these. Rode like it had rocks for wheels lmfao, but felt very solid. Probably one of the best looking Ford trucks imo too. They have a similar frontal appearance to the also popular 92-97 body style, but more variety when it comes to curves. It feels like these trucks were nearly perfect, had it not been for this damned rust belt. I hope to own one someday

A lot of diesel trucks were/are rated lower than the same truck configured with a gas engine due to the weight of the diesel engines. I can pull 10k with my 99 F250, but 16k with a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch. some of the ratings are based on what the hitch was rated for...Class 3 hitches were only 10k back then....there are class 4 hitches now....cab and bed configurations, 2WD/4WD, short bed, long bed, base model, Lariat model, payload package options, etc. all play a role in the capacities....I think back then too, the numbers were based on GVWR laws possibly.

The 7.3 was seriously the only great engine to be put in a super duty. GM on the other hand didn’t have a bad engine in their trucks from 99-2006.

Being to young in 99, if I “was” a hard working adult back then a 99 7.3 power stroke was the only choice then. The 2nd one only being the 12 valve Cummins which was discontinued the year prior, an even then it was a dodge, junk built truck. An of course GMs 6.5 was very underwhelming in comparison to Ford an Ram back then. I’ve owned two 99 7.3s an definitely were one of my favorites of all time.

Just wait 10 years 1999 people, til Ford epically does an about-face and becomes the biggest offender of making trucks for those who are trying to pretend to be macho. And also, watch out for the new diesels coming out in 2004 people of 1999... you will not like the Powerstroke for over a decade! Hah

Ford junk. The 5.4 in these trucks was so underpowered for the class I have no idea why they offered it other than the fact that Ford was screwed at this time with no bigger displacement V8s, forcing people into the also doggy and inefficient v10. Only way to go was the 7.3 power stroke. One of the best engines Ford has offered in the last 30 years, partially because the designed obsolescence Ford is famous for wasn't in it due to it being a Navistar design.
@stevenvanheel3932

Completely agree. The v10 was a pretty strong engine but a dodge v10 got similar mileage and would run circles around the ford. They are also oversized and overly complicated because of the stupid OHC design. Overhead cams do not belong anywhere near a pickup truck engine. I’m actually in the process of removing a v10 out of a super duty at work right now because the dipstick rotted in half and the dipshits at ford decided to put it behind the oil cooler and behind the motor mount so there is no way to drill out the dipstick hole with the engine in the chassis. It’s funny how it’s always ford that is doing stupid shit like that.
