Why do they refer to the engine in the Stratus as being “Chrysler’s three liter v6”? Thought that was a Mitsubishi design, if I’m not mistaken. I mean, just look at that oil fill cap.

Because it was, this was Chrysler's own 3.0 different then the head gasket eating Mitsubishi 3.0.. Later the 3.0 became the 2.7 in the base LX cars till '11.
@ImmortanDan
Жыл бұрын
@@ljmorris6496 This is incorrect, the 3.0 was a Mitsu powerplant; the Intrepid's 3.5 V6 was a Chrysler design and the basis for the later 2.7-liter V6. Which, by the way, may not have been a head gasket eater but it also collected oil sludge like it was postmarks.
@Stressless2023
Жыл бұрын
@@ImmortanDan Correct - But the "oil sludge" reputation was generally misdiagnosed on the 2.7L V6 due to the internal timing chain driven water pumps wearing out and allowing coolant to enter and contaminate the oil which caused the "sludge".

The stratus coupe was just a rebodied mitsubishi eclipse, so wouldn't that mean the 3.0 v6 in both cars was mitsubishis design? The previous gen Stratus had a 2.5 v6 which was also made by mitsubishi.

If they stuffed the 3.5 from the intrepid into the stratus, and made it RWD or AWD, they would have easily sold double the amount that they did. People want an AWD or rwd sports/ touring car on the cheap, yet nobody from the big 3 makes one, and hasn't for nearly 25 years. Please FCA, just make a modern Eagle Talon tsi, or Dodge Stealth r/t, and make it cheap, and good.

Well, ABS did have some annoying gremlins back then; some of the systems failed less than gracefully, becoming *too* sensitive when they wore out. And a lot of cars did exclude it from the base trim; even the Crown Vic.

The engine sludge issue was with the 2.7L only, not the 3.2L or 3.5L. I had a 2001 with the 2.7L and used a semi synthetic oil every 3k and had no sludge issues. A bad design was the water pump which was inside the front engine cover and could leak water into the oil when it went bad. Mine went bad about 90k but I noticed it right away and no damage was done. My Intrepid ran great right up until I traded it in at 107k for a 2006 Dodge Magnum with the 3.5L.

@@Snake-ms7sj Yup - That Intrepid may very well still be on the road or lasted longer than most others simply due to you replacing the water pump before it destroyed the engine - The oil sludge reputation was misdiagnosed for years on the 2.7L V6, it was always the water pumps.
