Although you can still get a '16 Chevy Express (now HD only, but still this same van except for the front) and get the conversion with the 6.6L Duramax V8 TDi which would approximate the one in this video...

Chevy made a factory AWD (not 4X4) Savanna and Express for a few years starting a couple of years after this review first aired. Other than the badge there wasn't a lot externally to identify one. GM still sells the van, its under the commercial line, but they never sold them as a 4x4, Quigley is the company that does the 4x4 conversion, and if you buy the van new and have it shipped directly to Quigley, all the conversion work they do is covered by your vehicle's manufacturer's warranty. Quigley recently started allowing customers to bring in their older Econoline vans for 4x4 conversions, up until recently they wouldn't do a 4x4 conversion on a used van, but they will do so in many cases now, so those out there with older vans can still get that 4x4 conversion convenience...they do the conversions on the new Ford Transit vans, Mercedes Sprinters, and Ram Promaster series vans.

I believe that GM still sells them, you have to go to the commercial section to buy an Express van now...but you can buy the van and have it taken directly to a Quigley shop and they'll convert it to 4WD for you....too bad Ford quit making the Econoline vans...Ford has stopped making pretty much their whole line of great selling vehicles apparently selling a lot of a certain vehicle makes them have to work, so they just quit making everything the public and government agencies actually wanted (Crown Victoria, Econoline Vans, the original Ford Ranger). Take one of those cargo or passenger vans to Quigley have it 4x4 converted then take it to Sportsmobile to have the poptop tent roof installed and you got an awesome back country 4x4 camper. @wildbill23c
6 жыл бұрын
Ford didn't make it, the conversion was done by Quigley, a company that specializes in 4x4 conversions...they are now offering this same conversion for the new Ford Transit, Ram Promaster, and others. I thought when Ford did away with the Econoline that Quigley was probably just forced out of business, but they did change their rules and started allowing people to have their older Econoline Vans converted to 4x4's. When Ford and other manufacturers were making those types of vans Quigley would only do the conversions on new vans using Ford parts making their conversion fall under the manufacturer's factory warranty. So now with the newer style vans Quigley is now busy converting those new vans to the great reliable 4x4 systems found in heavy duty trucks...yes that means you have to get out and turn 2 knobs and then pull a lever inside the cab, but when you need 4WD you really want to know its working. I'm not sure where they went but there was a family in town that had an 80's Econline van that had the wheelchair lift conversion in it, and they had the Quigley 4x4 conversion done on it and it had the Powerstroke Diesel in it. That van looked awesome, and the owner was always modifying it with stuff to make it more offroad ready...they went camping, hunting, fishing, etc...and because of the 4x4 conversion and the wheel chair lift their disabled daughter was able to go along, which was exactly the reason the guy bought it and had it converted.

The model that had the awd system which was a permanent all wheel drive single range (no low range) setup was the half ton 1500 in the regular wheelbase and regular length only as a panel van or 8 passenger version and no other combinations. (Available from early 2000's until 2016 I believe it was).So if you wanted the 3/4 ton 2500 or the 1 ton 3500 with a true 4wd system this was your most common and "easiest" option.
@wildbill23c
4 жыл бұрын
Not in the full size vans, they offered an electronic/full time AWD system in the Savana and the Astro...Ford did the same in the Ford Aerostar for several years as well with a single speed transfer case that gave a 30/70 front/rear torque split, if I recall it used a Dana 28 transfer case, I'm not sure what the GM vans were equipped with for sure but seems the BW1372 or BW4472 were more common. They were a full time system, no low range, and used a viscous coupler to send power to the front axle....due to the way they were designed you'd never get a 50/50 torque split with them....but it usually provided enough power up front to get you through most situations.
@MattTrakker350

We had an '84 and '85 conversion van, and a good day on the highway doing 62MPH, you can get 28MPG. Any faster or against a bad wind, it'll drop to like 23, even down to 18 on the one van that didn't have an over drive. This one, with a more streamlined body, mirrors and grill, at the stock ride height...maybe 30MPG. I dropped a Corvette motor in the one van, and I could get near 30MPG most of the time, but if I ran it hard, it would get 8MPG. It's heavy and shaped like a brick, can't change physics.
