I have a two year old '15 Legacy 3.6R, purchased in August 2014. I just turned 30K and it's running like a champ - never had an issue. It's a beast in the winter, or slick conditions. Love the styling and interior space, and average 25mpg around town. If you don't consider this car over a Camry or Accord, you're crazy! I have more than enough power to get around, pass, and accelerate. I'm not looking to drag race other mid size cars - this car has everything I need.

Most of the comments about the Legacy are either from heresay, or straight out hating on the car in an out-of-context way. I bet most have barely driven it, let alone even touched it. And that is sad, because it's quite a worthy car in the segment it's targeting. I would be surprised if anyone actually in the market for an Accord/Camry would NOT consider the Legacy as it's overall package trumps those traditional class leaders in many areas. And the one thing that it will ALWAYS have in favor is the symmetrical AWD and boxer engine. Those are two huge Subaru traits that still remain compelling points in favor of the Legacy. Styling is subjective. So no point arguing that. There will be lovers and haters for all cars in this area. Subaru reliability issues? I have no idea about older Subaru's, but I have a 2008 Forester XT Sport with Cobb and Whiteline mods since day one. And have never had any of the issues mentioned here. And this is a modded vehicle pushing more power than stock. When it comes down to it, talking smack on youtube is one thing. But if you are ACTUALLY looking to buy a mid-sized near luxury sedan like an Accord or Camry, you seriously need to ignore the hate here and just go and test drive this car. I bet you'll come away more impressed than you were expecting.

Brian Westfield I know this is an older thread, but I love my 2016 2.5 Limited w Eyesight. Yes, it is underpowered; no it is not as comfortable or spirited as a Fusion (my previous car was a lemony 15 ecoboost fusion) but it does what I want it to do, and Subaru is always making adjustments to their cars, year after year. It is comfortable enough, gets me from a to b, has the safety and convenience features I wanted and would have had to pay at least an extra 50 a month for in a comparable fusion, and is a mature car for someone who appreciates a car as a whole. I had a 2009 Legacy that I loved and regretted going into a 2010 Fusion and losing my AWD. The 2015 was a 0% for 72 month deal with 6k off sticker for MYE clearance to eat negative equity on the 2010, and the main reason I did it. My first winter back in a Subaru, and I got to see just why I love the car and brand the way I do. 20 inches of wet snow, and plow drifts didn't stop the car. The torque vectoring is a nice touch for spirited driving, and the CVT isn't AS bad as people claim. Yes it's buzzy and can bog down, but once you know the trick is half throttle until your above 35-40 your golden. The simulated gear shifts actually feel quite nice when you push the car to that point. As for Eyesight, it saved my ass in the first week while changing lanes on the highway after a downpour when traffic came to a dead stop unexpectedly. It also has made my daily commute so much better, mitigating road rage and the frustration of modulating speed because of other people. If people just gave the car a chance they would see it is really quite good. Yes there are interior bits that still need help, yes the seats need more bolstering for lateral support, yes it needs some more power in the base engine (though with the new 2.4 coming in the ascent maybe the 3.6 will be taken away, and hopefully Subaru starts bringing small displacement turbos for the next generation), and yes it could have a smoother quieter ride, but as a whole it does its job above average across the board as a whole.

Symmetrical AWD is a bollocks buzzword that means jack shit in the real world (come on.. rigged tests going up against Hyundai and KIA with locking diffs not engaged or Honda/Acura who are the KINGS of active torque transfer?) Remember... even for the most crappy domestic car.. a blown head gasket is a write off.. not a rite of passage. And with a Subaru it’s twice as likely to happen vs an inline engine. You sound desperate for validation.

I have a 2015 2.5i limited and it’s fantastic! The CVT can do the efficiency thing if you want but if you mash the throttle it really hauls! The whole time the road holding is great. It’s low and actually really aggressive. I absolutely love the car. The next closest thing in feel is an Audi A4 which is much more expensive, a bit smaller, and heavier (if you get a Quattro one). Not hating, the Audi is lovely, but for those of us who don’t have that kind of scratch, the Legacy is amazing.

You're absolutely right! I have been researching 2015 sedans for the last 3 months and finally came to the conclusion there is little out there to compete with the Legacy, and nothing in the price range. I should say I bought a 2014 Outback for my wife last year after similar research. Anyway, I went to buy one two weeks ago and the Subaru dealer was completely sold out and the next two "allotments" were already sold out. I ordered a new Legacy 2.5 Limited with everything I could throw on it. Evidently, we're not the only people who think this is an exceptional car.

John DeMeo YES. Absolutely. This is the focus of this vehicle, and it performs well in this regard. Very quiet too, which is not normal for a Subaru. They clearly have their target set on a different demographic than the WRX of course. I would say it's a little more performance oriented in that it's slightly stiffer than an Accord or Camry, but not at the expense of comfort. Going around corners is more fun in this car, while still being an overall excellent daily driver for the real world.

The Civic would be in a different class than the Legacy since the Legacy is not a Compact, I would lean towards to Subaru, you'll have AWD, which depending on where you live will be a plus for a new driver during the winter. Also, if Honda's maitence rutine are anything like they used to be you'll be in the shop for regularly scheduled maitence more with the Honda. My mother worked for the local Honda dealership in the early 1990's, at the service desk, she said they're maitence schedule was a lot less of a span in mileage than a domestic and that if you went over they voided your warranty on the spot. If your 16 and getting a new car, the Legacy would probably be cheaper when you get out on your own. The 4 cylinder would also be a wiser option for a first time driver as well. If you would prefer something similar to a Civic, but with Subaru perks like AWD, look into an Impreza. It's a compact like the Civic, and gets 37 on the Highway, they also will have a brand new design for the Impreza for the 2017 model year. Hope this helps you on your decision.

It's a bit better than generation 5 Legacy, but it now looks like something a 70 year old would drive and that's not a good thing. The transmission and engine was very weak, underpowered for a Subaru. The engine noise was too quiet for my liking. But the worst thing was the numb handling! I would buy the 2015 Kia Optima SX Turbo or 2015 Toyota Camry over this.

RealMadridSuperiority I agree bro!
@bwest6275
9 жыл бұрын
RealMadridSuperiority It's all in the eye of the beholder. I'm assuming you did a quick test drive. I have had a 2015 3.6R Limited fully loaded with the Eye-Sight system on loan for a week and can say at first i had the same preconceptions. But after a day using the car in a variety of conditions, things started to change. While this is not going to be a WRX, it's not intended to be. Not sure if you've driven Camry's or Kia Optimas, but the fundamental flaw with those IMHO is they are FWD. And that there in itself is one huge reason I'd never get those cars instead of a Legacy. And styling for sure is bland, although I think it's much more "handsome" than the Camry, although I do admit the Kia is pretty sharp looking (credit that to Walter De Silva of Audi fame). But it's obvious the new Legacy is catered to the demographic as you mentioned who is most-likely NOT looking for boy-racer looks as the older generations of Legacy used to have. Not a 70 years old demographic per se. But consider someone in their late 30's with a family who still values AWD and Subaru value. While I'll agree it would be great if this car had more power, for daily use its more than adequate. The transmission is definitely NOT fun to use, but in automatic mode it does the job perfectly fine to keep you in the powerband at all times. The interior perhaps could use more inspiration, but it's once again inline with it's competition, and I think a little bit more functional. The infotainment system of the Limited is stellar. The responsiveness is like a smartphone. IMPRESSIVE compared to other brands costing thousands more. The Harmon Kardon system has the audio fidelity approaching that in my GLK with the equivalent HK premium audio package (IE: damn good for the money). Interior space is fantastic, especially in the rear. Some 6ft tall people still fit fine back there. The Eye-sight safety system is fantastic and responsive system that works just as well as my 2015 Mercedes GLK with active driver assit package. This safety system in itself beats the Kia and Toyota. And although it's once again not WRX worthy, it handles much batter than a Camry. Contribute that to the AWD, flat 6, and chassis tuning. It's clear Subaru has it's market set to the more conservative buyer, but it's for a conservative buyer that still values good handling and overall value. I can't expect a Kia to hold it's value anywhere close to a Subaru, and reliability remains to be seen. A Camry will most-likely hold it's value better, but I suspect the revisions made for this latest version of the Legacy will start to draw in buyers from the Toyota camp. As I mentioned in the beginning, it's in the eye of the beholder. And if you are even in the market for a Camry, let alone a Kia, I can't see how anyone would pass up the Legacy as the superior vehicle. I will say this though: I hope Subaru will release an STi version of the Legacy. THAT would be awesome.

That really is awful fuel economy. The 1997 A8 Quattro gets that kind of mileage with a 4.2 liter V8... and that's nearly 20 years older. The power is fine, it no doubt has an astoundingly flat torque curve... which makes it horribly sad to see it hooked up to a CVT. Seems like a good family car for people who don't drive much and live in snow, but a wagon would serve them better.
@Y10Q
9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, bullshit. I have never owned a V8 that got over 15mpg real world in a car, or over 25mpg on a highway. A truck with a V8 gets about 8-9mpg. Cadillac's V8 is light years ahead of Audi's V8, and it still got about 24mpg on the highway, and I averaged about 15mpg. Thats the truth. People buy a 4 cylinder because it does 25mpg no matter how you cut it. Subaru AWD 4 cylinder will never go below 23mpg. And on the highway you are getting around 30mpg. These new DI engines don't last long but they do get around 40mpg, no kidding there. I have witnessed it myself. 4 cylinder Outback with a CVT easily goes over 34mpg on a flat highway. A V8 will never get that kind of fuel economy, just because you have extra cylinders and they have to get fuel, even if it's 1500rpm at 65.
@hyperlogos
9 жыл бұрын
Y10Q Wow, you really have no idea what you're talking about, do you? Modern small V8 trucks can see better than 15 mpg. The Audi A8 gets real-world _better_ than 25 mpg freeway if you don't stick your foot in it all the time. Perhaps you should learn to drive without sticking your foot in it. You are aware that modern V8 engines have bank shutdown?
@Y10Q
9 жыл бұрын
Martin Espinoza Real world fuel economy for 4 cylinder is 25mpg, 6 cyl is 20mpg and 8 cyl is 15mpg. Plus or minus 5mpg depending on if it's a truck or a car for pre 2009 years. After 2009, just push everything by 5mpg. A 4cyl does 30mpg, 6 cylinder is good for 25mpg and a latest V8 with all kinds of fancy transmissions might get you 20mpg with a wind in your back. So stop lying to yourself. A V8 will never see 25mpg or even 20mpg in normal driving conditions. What are you really getting with your Audi V8? About 12mpg if you are lucky??
@hyperlogos
9 жыл бұрын
Y10Q In the real world _with traffic_ I normally get about 20-22 on the freeway, and around 14 around town. But I do mostly freeway driving and mostly when there is not traffic, and it gets no shit around 25-26 MPG. And the Subarus most emphatically do _not_ get 30 mpg with their 4 bangers.
@MatchuCT
9 жыл бұрын
Martin Espinoza I doubt such an older car gets better mileage with a v8, but then again i could be wrong. I find that some of the dash fuel economy displays tend to show a better mpg than actual consumption. Also, you shouldnt be surprised that bigger modern cars can achieve better fuel efficiency nowadays, afterall, your money goes into the engineering. Thats why a 887hp Porsche can get better fuel efficiency than a prius. You pay cheaper, you get cheaper.

Automatic transmissions are waste of time to be honest. There more expensive to repair. There harder to work on. You have less control over the car. You use more fuel. And You have to rely solely on the brakes to slow or stop the car. And if your stuck somewhere with a flat battery, won't be able to clutch start the car. These are all the reasons why I won't buy a automatic car.
@ThePointblank
9 жыл бұрын
1. Funny, because automatic transmissions now have better fuel economy than the manuals. Take the current Legacy in Canada. We still get a manual transmission; per our ratings, the manual transmission 2.5 gets 26/36 MPG city/highway. The automatic will do 31/43 MPG. 2. Most automatics have a manual mode, and the Legacy also has that capability; you can downshift or upshift when in manual mode with the flappy paddle gear changer. 3. When was the last time you have to clutch start a car? If you are that negligent in vehicle maintenance to have missed the earlier signs that the battery was dying, such as sluggish starts, dimming headlights immediately when starting, etc, then you're an idiot. So that just leaves repair costs; that's easy. Get a car that has good service and reliability history. Most of the time, the repair shops don't bother fixing; they just replace as that's easier in terms of labour.
@lbax8897
9 жыл бұрын
ThePointblank I've had to clutch start a couple mates cars in my time. Yes, Automatics have improved a lot over the years. But to say that they are better in ever way is wrong. Automatics are more technical, tend to promote less power and are half the cost to repair/rebuild. I've owned both and found manual to exceed my expectations as a posed to Automatics.
@ThePointblank
9 жыл бұрын
Luke Baxter Then your mates need to pay attention to their cars and maintain them better. Also, some high end performance cars are only available with the automatic; the thing is, for these cars, you are too slow to change gears to match the power. Cars like the Lexus LFA, Bugatti Veyron, Nissan GT-R, Ferrari 488, etc.
@lbax8897
9 жыл бұрын
Which is silly. Its just another way for manufacturers to make more money off consumers. I'd love a GTR if it had a manual option with launch control. I'm sure a lot of people would. They have semi auto, that's just not the same. Changing gears efficiently is a matter of skill.
@ThePointblank
9 жыл бұрын
Not really, for example, in the Lexus LFA, the engine revs so fast that you can't react in time. The engine will go from idle to redline in 0.6 seconds. You can change gears using the flappy paddles, but you won't get the raw speed that the computer can do in mere milliseconds to react to the increasing revs. The computer is just faster than your reaction time.
