Hi, I just saw this video and I was asking if you can help me answer this question: why did Motte and Bailey Castles helped William control England?
@historyblast9907
3 жыл бұрын
Sure, so there's a lot of reasons why: - It gave him a physical advantage, the ability to defend the lands he had conquered in these castles. He used them to defend lands and also attack the areas where there were rebellions. - He used them to show he was powerful. They were a way to stamp his mark on the land. - It made people fear him for his building ability - It gave the Normans wealth since they became a major point of trade in the regions. - The old Saxons now realised that resistance to William was pointless.

Interesting and informative video. The first motte and bailey castles appeared in Normandy in the 1020's and there are at least 4 or 5 motte and baileys recorded in England before 1066. Norman lords that came to England to support Edward the Confessor in 1041 and were given land as a reward and built motte and bailey castles to protect themselves.

Thanks! Yes they began earlier than the conquest. It's a shame none of the original wooden structure exist today but loads of Mottes still around.
