Love the old gold. I believe Roosevelt didn't want the motto on the coins.

Present Theodore Rosevelt felt that evoking God on coinage was sacrilegious and he asked St Gaudens to leave it off, but the public disagreed and wanted it back on, which produced the "with motto" version,

I think the sacrilegious part was not necessarily being on the coin but the use of the coin with the motto on it. Used at a brothel etc. Think I read that in a Whitman book but not sure.

Hey Ben. Firstly, I'm very pleased I went No Motto!! Secondly (and I only read this after we spoke), in his 2006 book "Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908," Roger Burdette explains not only why then-President T. Roosevelt objected to the motto, but how "In God We Trust" came to appear on American coinage in the first place. I won't spoil the story by detailing it here, but it was very interesting and has a neat Civil War tie-in!

Dang those are so pretty ! Many , many years ago I saw hundreds of these a customer had, heck it could have been a thousand or more I don't know, there were more than I could count. It was truly a site to see. The owner was an elderly gentleman at that time with a couple pos sons.. I've wondered what became of the S.G. hoard. The sons probably sold them off after squandering their inheritance. I'd be thrilled to have 1.

President Theodore Roosevelt believed that putting the motto on coins cheapened its meaning. As a pastor of a local church, I agree with Roosevelt, but it seems that he and I are in the minority.

Never really felt like it should have been made into a required element to begin with. The Motto of The United States is E Pluribus Unum. In God We Trust or In God Is Our Trust, were both Civil War sentiments, and quite understandable for giving comfort to some people, but ultimately agree that it should not be on our money.

I think it gos great with the constitution. "One nation under God indivisible" and think it is a great reminder what made our country great.

@@mattmatt6572 No where in the constitution does it say "one nation under god indivisible". You're thinking of the pledge of allegiance. In fact there is no reference to a god at all in the constitution.

@@ammocan2796 Didn't say some of the founders weren't Christian. There's a whole multitude of views from the people who drafted the U.S. Constitution. However, that's not the point of my comment. The factual point I was making is god is not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution. I would say that is intentional because they wanted a separation of church and state (also mentioned in their writings). Hence why religious freedom was a big part of the Bill of Rights, and why I don't agree "In god we trust" being on our currency. We're a country without an official religion, but you are free to practice whichever you like. That's what makes it great.
