I been looking into the M2 and M4 and just found out that these things got pre amps that can even run a shure sm7b without any issues. No cloudlifter or anything necessary to assist the pre amp's gain. That is absolutely MADNESS for an interface that low of cost. Headphone amp in the interface is great too. That and the loopback function thing had me sold. I just bought a M4 today. Thanks for this video, David. It was a huge help

@@HoldMyBeerFam Well let me put it this way. If the m2 or m4 cant drive your headphones (which I highly doubt. Im almost certain it can), you can bet your ass any other interface in that price range wont be able to either and if that were the case, you can get something like a presonus hp4 headphone amp like I have and that headphone amp has so much power that it can drive any headphones you throw at it. Not to mention it has not just 1 powerful headphone amp but 4 of them which is perfect for things like tracking/recording It is not that expensive either.

Nice review and studio equipment. Hey, cool haircut also =)) I have the M4. I using it at least from the March 2020. This is absolutely amazing sound card. Before that I used the great old E-mu 1212M PCI. But when I bought my new PC power workstation this card couldn`t be use anymore due the lack of the PCI-slots. I left it to my previous PC. M4 is really best in class interface with outstanding quality of build and SOUND! My card working fine with an original drivers without any crushes/hangs and I can easily working with not so heavy projects even under 64 samples of latency. Also me very like that it have a couple of the RCA - you can plug the consumer`s loudspeakers, for instance. Ah, yeah. The MOTU M2/M4 haven`t any routing software, anyway you can use it with a VB Voicemeeter Banana/Potato software. It works just perfect. Plus you get not just a mixer but an excellent parametric EQ and some of comp/limiter, etc. and 8 x 8 in/out matrix! But again - the sound of it is absolutely great, with fine detail, powerful, solid and clean. I can compare it with an E-mu 1212M - almost the same quality and some of the differences you can distinguish wearing the high grade professional or HI-FI class headphones only. Are you a gamer? Ok. M4 (I think and M2) works fine with any games: PC or emulator based. These cards are really worth every cent. 9/10! (some issues with buttons on the front on my card) Thanks for the attention =) Cheers, Qwasar-T

I made the a similar choice, but based my decision more on the MOTU appearing to have a lot more dynamic range and headroom, at least judging by what specs I could find on the max input levels. I was looking to upgrade my Behringer UMC404HD because its preamps are noisy and also my synths are always clipping the thing. The SSL2+ doesn’t really have many specs listed, but the dynamic range seemed more on par with my Behringer, and it looked like max input levels were listed as even lower than the Behringer’s specs somehow? I know listed specs are unreliable, but it was troubling to me that SSL doesn’t really provide much info about their little interfaces. I like the plugins, SSL design, and the 4K switch, but I get a feeling the MOTU is a much better piece of hardware for the money. I am also going to be waiting a bit for it, but the SSL was also backordered when I made my purchase, so no real difference there!

You do outstanding videos buddy. I've been through the other interfaces in the same price category, including the Clarett, but bought the Motu 8Pre ES and it is unbelievably great to work with, especially the control program, and the sound quality and gain is superb. I ordered some M4s as well. I sold a Clarett and I'm selling some other stuff to go pretty much all Motu as well, mainly because their "overall" solution is best for me. Funny thing, realizing they are "made in US", it was unbelievable to find a screw rattling around in my brand new 8 Pre. I took it out but didn't inspect far enough to find where it came from my brand new interface. I called MoTu to verify that it was made in America.. made me chuckle. I never ever received an Asian piece of electronics with a screw rolling around in it, and I'm old. It still works great though.

It is July 1st, 2020. I have waited for an M4 for a month or more, and I saw on Sweetwater's website that their supply of M4 is coming July 3rd! Awesome! Can't wait! Anyone buying an M2 to save $50 is not being smart, because sooner or later you find that YOU DO NEED a stereo input using 2 line ins which the M4 offers. On the M2 yes, you can use the two XLR/Line inputs to create a stereo recording but then you run out of possibly using another other inputs! I plan to use the M4 for one vocal, one instrument, and one stereo input for stereo background tracks from KZitem etc etc.

So, I bought an M4 to build a portable rig for when I’m away… and was expecting it to be “very good”. I compared the DAC against my Prism Lyra and was astounded at how comparable in quality they were. I also compared it to a Lavry DA10… which was no match for the M4, which just sounded more detailed and clear (like the Prisms). It also sounded significantly better than the Chord Mojo 2, and a 2010 RME UC sounded quite woolly in comparison. The ADC is very good indeed, but the Prism is better in this regard, mainly because it’s very forgiving when clipped, and has slightly better SNR. Anyway, I couldn’t resist plumbing my mastering chain into the loop and mastered a couple of tracks through it (no AD clipping). It performed amazingly well. The drivers are very stable too (far better than Prism). Not a fair 1:1 comparison, but when taking into account the AD/DA loop and monitor DAC quality alone…. It’s a pretty wild bit of kit for the money.

Hi, I'm António Filipe from Portugal I follow your channel since 2018, I love the tone as you do your reviews. I saw your review on the Motu M2 sound interface, the Shuer SM7B microphone with the Fethead applicator and ended up buying them. I connected the Shuer SM7B microphone (+ the fethead) and my Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 headphones to the Motu M2 sound interface, installed the driver, and was able to record and listen to Adobe Audition, however when I'm not recording (and even recording) no sound comes out of the headphones. What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't sound come out of the headphones at the time of recording? Thank you very much and continued success with your wonderful channel.

Will I have the same capability to do this on the M4... I don't want to have to be doubling up on preamp use.. if so how is the connection made please. Best Regards Alan

I'm pretty positive the C to C cable will not affect the performance, as the only thing that could be affected would be latency which is already at a minimum installing the dedicated drivers. Everything else of course cannot be affected by the cable or connection. But, I'll double check.

Simple voltage conversion. Most condensers require between 12 and 48V and draw about 3mA of current. USB2 provides 5V and 500mA. Way more than you need for 48v
