When I seen the scissors on the headstone of Raffaelo Talarico I immediately thought he was a tailor. Those don't look like the scissors that barbers use but instead look like the kind for cutting fabric. I also tried using Google to translate what his stone says and the bottom part says something about leaving his mother in the deepest pain. There is not a photo on findagrave for his stone. Anyways the 1900 census shows that Raffaelo was a tailor and so was two of his uncles that lived with them (his mother's brothers).

It was also interesting to scroll through the pages of that census because page after page it is people that were born in Italy or their parents were born in Italy. There was also a few people from Bohemia and Poland but mostly it was Italy that the people were from and many had immigrated here as it shows how long they had been in the US along with if they were citizens yet. I love genealogy!!!!

My grandmother was a little girl during the Spanish flu. Out of all her brothers and sisters all 10 of them, none of them got sick. She told me how her parents were very aware of how to live through a pandemic since they went through one as young people in Italy. So they never went out without face coverings and gloves. There was one stone with the picture of a little girl, my age at the time, that had passed. I used to pretend she was my ghost friend. I know thats where my love of cemeteries came from. My mother and I used to drive or walk through cemeteries, looking at the beautiful statuesl dates and pictures on headstones. I've seen many beautiful stained glass windows in mausoleums - true works of art dedicated to loved ones who now rest there. Although they may deny this, I think you are performing a great service to "live" people everywhere - the life and death cycle is part of our "earthly" experience and always will be. I enjoy your journeys - be safe!!

Great video. There is a cemetery in Washington D.C. ( St. Mary's) that has a large Italian ' population' , many of the older markers from early 1900's have the photos on them including postmortem photos of children in their caskets. I always found it fascinating to literally put a face to the name on the marker and wonder about what their lives were like.

It's so interesting to learn these things. I'm glad some cultures/ ethnic groups did this, it preserves a moment in time for later generations to see. Some of those pictures are so soulful, they look like they would speak to you if they could. Now that I'm older, I have become more understanding of post mortem pictures as well, as I never cared for them but now comprehend so much more how they were important to families of deceased loved ones. It's touching, really.

Those porcelain photos are what first made me interested in cemeteries; wondering what their lives were like, back when I was eight years old riding my bike through Saint Adalberts cemetery in Niles Illinois. It was like a time machine, to look at each of those pictures and wonder who each of them was, the stories, their particular infinite stories that they could tell. It seems that it’s mostly Italians, or Czech/Polish, or Armenian cemeteries / graves where I see this. Not German, or Irish, English or others. But today it’s now a new trend coming back ….for all.

The thoughts on so many of these people being immigrants is not always true. My great grand parents are buried at Mr Carmel and St Adelberts. All were of Polish decent but born in Chicago. To see their pictures, names and areas they lived could give the impression they were immigrants they lived, ate, spoke the language of their heritage. Some never even spoke English very much because they lived in completely Polish neighborhoods where all their needs were met for food clothing housing church ect. They have very few reasons for leaving these enclaves often referred to as Little Warsaw. On all accounts they looked and sounded like they were fresh off the boat, but in fact were native born American, Chicagoans.

I wonder, do people realize that grave stones upkeep is their family's responsibility. Sort of like maintaining a house, a car, etc. They need to check on their families and monuments, even if it is only once every year.
