I am a fan of Mount Gay, and truly enjoy their Master's Select. The $400 tag for a 5.5-year spirit is a huge call. Thank you for the video.

Yeah, I think the Master Select and Blenders releases are far better deals. Though some of those feel a touch overpriced for the abv.

I like the idea behind this but Mount Gay's pricing structure for pretty much all of their limited releases is frankly obscene.

I really loved the Mount Gay Pot Still release a few years back. Much more into that oily nature you described, albeit at 48% ABV (but still super flavorful). I didn't mind paying almost $200 for that bottle.

Hey Arminder what are your thoughts on Hampden Great House vs Worthy Park 12, have the budget to buy either but wanted to get your 2 cents? What about the Appleton Heart Collection?
@therumrevival

Hmm depends on which Great House and which Hearts. That being said, I think I'd probably reach for the Worthy Park 12 more often than those others. Its just more drinkable if that makes sense.

Excellent, thorough review Arminder. The details you cover are all encompassing and appreciated. I keep walking by this bottle at my local rum purveyor and it’s priced really well, but yeah, no 😊

Great video, I love the detailed notes you give just from the scent. Are there any rums you can think of that taste pretty similar to the Mount Gay in the sub-$50 range?
@therumrevival

Thanks for watching. That's a tough one. Definitely don't get that flavor in any of Mount Gay's other rums. No rum quite $50 quite jumps out to me as being simliar. However, while this isn't a sub $50 rum, the recent 16 year Isautier Molasses rum also had honey and floral notes that were sort of similar

With you. I enjoyed it but price to taste alone are way off. Shame i didnt have a sample prior to my giant Mt Gay side-by-side article - i cant see if fairing well against HV Last Ward 07/09 esp on value. Agree also, love what they're doing tho. Thanks. I'm not sure I understand the economics of Mt' Gay's molasses. Rums made with sugar cane juice (like Agricol's) and/or sugar cane syrups, even if aged for up to 5 + years, don't generally run $400 a bottle. What is it from the production side that is driving the cost so high? The use of their own cane fields? It is not unusual for rum producers to do so....especially in the world of sugar cane juice/syrup rums. The aging? $400 for a 5 year old rum is way off the scale.

there's definitely an element of adding a "premium tax" to the price because they think they can... but also , my understanding is that they bought land, built out a whole infrasturcre for growing and harvesting, hired staff for it, plus eventually built their own sugar factory to process that cane.

@@therumrevival I applaud their direction but have to question their business plan. Seems a bit like Ford building a new plant for production of a new "mass market" car model and trying to pay for it by charging customers more than what BMW and Mercedes charge for their top end models.

Mount Pay severely overcharges for their Single Mistake rum using their own molassinine. With that price, I can only conclude their marketing people must be smoking those funny cigarettes imported from Jamaica.

Definitely don't take what I'm saying as any kind of informed financial advice, but I don't see it really selling out any time soon. I get the feeling it might be on the shelves for awhile and thus likely not go up in price.

This is just completely ridiculous and is Mount Gay trying to take advantage of consumers. In my opinion, you were far too nice in this video. You know this price is not worth it. Not even close. Don’t be afraid to be critical of these bastards when they try things like this. Dear Four Square: please don’t look at this price tag and get any ideas. We aren’t buying this! Sincerely, Ryan.

Kudos for kicking in the money and actually reviewing this thing, it may be awhile before anyone else gets around to it. 😂 I absolutely support MG and Foursquare's projects sourcing their own Bajan molasses, but i too am baffled by the pricing. Maybe they saw what Foursquare's LFT was going for at auction and decided to cut the secondary market off at the pass? 🥲
@therumrevival

Maybe you're on to something with the LFT. And the prices/demand for the Appleton Legend too. Though there's no way this has that much interest/demand as those two. Especially since there's so much more of it and its a yearly thing. Still all for them taking control over their molasses.
