Mount Tarawera, situated within the Ōkataina Volcanic Centre of New Zealand's dynamic Taupō Volcanic Zone, is a complex of rhyolitic lava domes. Its geological history is marked by episodic eruptions, the most notable being the violent 1886 basaltic eruption. This catastrophic event created a 17-kilometer long rift that bisected the mountain and significantly altered the surrounding landscape.
