XC racer here. All around good advice. Nothing groundbreaking, but a great starting point. The biggest gains are definitely with tires and training. Z2 is huge and it’s absolutely possible to do it on the MTB. It’s a slightly more gravel oriented style of riding, but I think it makes a difference. Not that cross-training on a different bike isn’t going to work, but more specific training to what you’re trying to do goes a long way. Volume is another point. Generally the more time you spend on the bike (usually in Z2) the faster you get. Tires are a bit tricky because it’s always a trade off in risk. The faster the tire the less grip you have. It takes a different style of riding. Often casings play a role in rolling resistance but it’s a trade off for flat protection. I rarely ever run below an EXO. Congrats on the progress! I think we all know what climb you were talking about. That thing was brutal!
