I decided to go for a quick ride up the trail to Lloyd's Lookout from Red Rock and record myself on the way down. I've been up here MANY times, both on foot and on my bike; I've even tried to make a video like this in the past, but I kept running into technical difficulties and/or the footage just came out poorly.
The trail depicted in this video is a segment of the longer Nipigon River Trail, which in turn is a part of the Trans Canada Trail network. The Nipigon River Trail in its totality is considered a black diamond trail, but this in reference to its difficulty as a hiking trail, not a bike trail (bicycles are permitted but not explicitly endorsed on this trail), and this particular segment isn't one that I would consider to be in that echelon for either discipline. I do recall seeing a map which marked this section as a blue square, and I think this is more accurate.
I have hiked further down the trail, but Lloyd's Lookout is the farthest I've gone on my bike; the trail gets rough enough after the lookout that I'd rather not risk it when I'm by myself. There is an alternative route which bypasses the ridge where the lookout is located that I think would make a really good bike trail, but the last time I went that way there were too many large trees lying across it to maintain any sort of speed. I've never actually traversed the trail in its entirety for pretty much the same reason I've never biked beyond Lloyd's Lookout.
There are several trails in Thunder Bay I'd like to record, and a few trails dotting Lake Superior's North Shore I've still yet to try my hand at on my bike; I hope to do a lot more riding over the course of this summer in general.
