Guitarist Leslie West died yesterday, from complications from diabetes. Founder of the Rock Band "Mountain" (Mississippi Queen) in 1969, West was a friend of Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townsend, guitarist for "The Who" and many other rock guitarists. West was age 75. We are losing the greats, of Classic Rock and Roll from both age, and illness. We will always have their music. God Bless

Jamel! This song has a great story to it... The Drummer from Mountain was previously in a band called Energy in the late 60's and the power went out at their show in Cape Cod Mass (I believe). In an effort to not lose the crowd and keep them entertained while they were waiting for the PA's to come back on, drummer Corky Lang started banging out this rhythm on his drum kit. A beautiful sultry woman in the crowd got up and started dancing to the beat in the front row. It made a big impression on the band members and the crowd, so they started working on a song called 'The Queen' with that drum part and trying to capture the sexy essence of this beautiful woman dancing with abandon in front of an amphitheatre full of fans. It rolled around in different versions as just a snippet of song & lyrics until Corky met Leslie West and started the band Mountain.. Leslie had the riff in his head but no concept of where to use it or what the song around it could be... They put the beat and feeling of that dark interlude at the power outage show with Leslie's incredible riff and there you have it-- instant classic.

Jamel, remember this is the 1970s. Actually it’s late 60s. So getting a sound like that’s pretty hard. Not a lot of digital effects and what not. The sound you’re hearing is the result of (Leslie West of course) and a huge slab of mahogany (A Junior with A P90) through a Sunn Colosseum PA setup. All knobs to the right (dimed) There is a couple of videos online showing the exact set up and doing demos on them. The Sunn amplifiers were bought from Hendrix after Jimmy went to Marshall. From what I understand. And you can see West’s set up at the Cincinnati pop festival on tube. This was a trio, and all were fabulous musicians...check him out on Conan or Letterman??? Can’t remember, but you can find him playing Mississippi queen. This guy is still around also. Check out Dreams of milk and honey Or Blood of the sun

In 1971 I sneaked my mom's car out and drove 200 miles to see Mountain in Jacksonville, Fl when I was seventeen. I got close to the stage and had my head turned inside out by the band. Leslie West was pure power on guitar. Felix Pappilardi on bass and keyboards was right there driving the rhythm along with Corky Laing on drums. Corky used big fat sticks and must have broken a dozen throughout the concert. I got into a world of trouble when I finally made it home at 3am, but it was worth it!

It brings a smile on my face when I see someone stank face some rock and roll. This is such a great song. Leslie West (the lead singer) said they made it short on purpose because they wanted the radio stations to prefer it, shorter songs = more time for advertisements. sidenote: That 45 had Mississippi Queen on both sides.
