Great video Peter! I feel like this new 360 camera has given you so much more freedom to film any part of your day with a lot less hassle compared to setting up GoPro's. I really enjoy watching you work and listening to your commentary. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.

I totally agree now that you point it out, it must save so much time in camera setup. It works so well with the large machine and work area.

The big advantage is you can just set it and in post editing chose your view point. Even though your filming at something like 5.7 K your only using a small part of it. So it’s kind of like using digital zoom. So for showing something in detail the GoPro will still be better. For for a general Vlog type of camera the 360 camera is better.

I just went thru a bucnh of my hold down hardware with an adjustable tap and loosened the threads just a bit so I can now spin the hold down nuts fast and easy on all of them. I think it will wind up a huge time savings in the end as they were always getting stuck before then I would have to wrench a nut down an inch to get what I needed.

Thanks Peter for the video. Like the hint with the offset on the tailstock. Regarding the problem with the door. I've an idea to use a small frequency drive and 3 Pcs. Normally Closed contactors. You did a video for some time ago, where one of the contactor did not work properly. My idea is to insert them after the built-in contactors, so when the Mazak is stopped you will be able to switch on the new contactor set and feed current from the new small frequency drive to the spindle drive. Maybe have a small PLC to control the contactor set and speed on the frequency drive, including the interlock so it can't be started during normal operating. Wago plc is cheap and can be programed in Open Sources CodeSys 2.3. Before you give it a go, then talk to the Mazak dude, if the encoder will confused the Mazak unit due to suddenly it generate pulses even though, that the Mazak unit has ordered a stop.

Good to get an update Peter. The 360 is nearly like having your own camera crew that requires no rehearsal. I have been doing logos, signs and even some molds for cast iron foundry as well as art panels, all in wood delrin and epoxy. All of it since I waded into CNC work. I was watching your YT content long before I ordered my table. 600 x 1200mm x 200mm Z effective envelope. Recently been getting more requests for small parts in aluminum and have decided to take on some of it. The stock work surface was barely up to holding softwood till I increased the mass with hardwood ply. The frame is cast iron thankfully, so will be upgrading to some heavy gauge 6061 T651 extrusions. Found enough used 45 x 180 that will allow for rugged M8 socket cap / t-nut to secure work reliably. Have just enough to cover the entire work surface. So add another 100lbs of mass and a good measure of stiffness for mounting a proper vice. Maybe you have a suggestion for a 4" or 6" machinist vise that won't cost the earth. Best wishes, Chris

I've been watching your videos for quite a few years now, and it's very evident how knowledgeable and skilled you are! A lot of your videos have taught me a few things over the years lol. I did have a couple of questions though. (Which you may have answered at some point in one of your videos). How did you get into machining? How long have you been machining? How many different types of machines have you used? Have you done any type of mold-making before? (That's my skill set and I'm curious if you've dabbled in it) But just want to say I love your style of videos and the way you walk through your days! So don't let the haters get to you!! You do really really good work man!!

on my mazak at work (a 3 axis vertical mill) i can turn on the tool spindle up to 500 rpm with the door open. with the doors open and with jog button or manual mode activated, I set the rpm I want with the spindle override keys, then, hold down the spindle jog button and it'll run the spindle as long as I keep the button pressed.

Peter sure you can run spindle with open doors. I am sure there is service procedure for it. Otherwise it wouldn’t be possible to balance tool spindle properly in the machine. On our DMG YOM:2019 you can do this by switching one bit in parameters. Except this our doors are pneumaticaly actuated it makes things easy to “cheat” the machine. I disconnect air supply and then unscrew key for lock and I give machine command to close doors then you enter key into lock and voila.
@EdgePrecision

Your machine must not have switches on the door open side. If I did what you are saying it would immediately get an alarm of door malfunction. One time the lock key broke off in one of the switches (I have a video on repairing it). The control looks at all the switches and even the time it takes. If the doors are open (The limit switches are made on the cylinders retract side) and if there is a switch/key on the open switch/lock thing. It will see there is a error in the doors sequence and give an alarm. I have a guy that works on Mazaks (Not from Mazak) he works on many of these machines here in Houston (There are quite a few of them). He is very good. I have asked him if it could be done. Let me be clear he doesn't work for Mazak so he doesn't care about the safety issue involved. Even he says it can't be done. He says maybe if the ladder was rewritten. But a lot of other things come into play then about the machine and the tool changer the high pressure coolant Exct. Believe me I have checked into this. If I had the manual doors. Like the small intergrex that's here its no problem. We did it on that machine.

Can you jog with the door open? On my mill turn I use a toothpick to hold the jog button down so i can polish o-ring grooves or deburr edges. Would be better with more rpm but it's better than nothing.
@EdgePrecision

Yes I can jog the turning spindle only. But it jogs very slowly say around 10 rpm. At that speed you really can’t do anything. I can jog the C axis faster with the hand wheel faster than that.

is it not even possible to bypass it by removing the door switches somewhere else? to fake the it? and run a cable to button to manually close?
@EdgePrecision
Жыл бұрын
On most machines you can remove the switches latch and leave it in the switch. Not on this machine. Because it has switches on the cylinders that open and close them. The instant the door opens it has to see both the latch switch and the cylinders switch open. So if the latch is in but the cylinder closed is off it instantly gives an alarm. This machine will do nothing with a door alarm.

I don’t think they are worried about the general public. What they are, is people that know what they are looking at. I have also heard the reverse. A engineer watches my video from a machinist point of view gets a idea of how to improve their design for production.

Nope sorry that wont work. Been there tried that. There are to many switches on the air cylinders that operate the doors. If you put the key in the lock switches (There are two) the minute the door opens and comes off the air cylinders switch it gets a alarm. If you try to override the air cylinders switches you get a alarm. There is also pressure sensitive bumpers on the doors so it wont close on you. If you bump one of those when the doors are moving you get a alarm. Short of rewriting the ladder in the control this cant be bypassed in any way. And with all the switches it would be difficult to make it work both ways if not impossible. If anything goes wrong with those doors on this machine it wont do anything.
