Jean-Joseph Mouret (1682-1738) was born in Avignon where his father was a silk merchant and an amateur violinist. Jean-Joseph settled in Paris at the age of twenty-five and rapidly became established on the musical and social scene. His fame arose from his operas, and although little of his music is performed today, his name lives on because of the popularity of his first "Suite de symphonies", of which this is the first movement.
