I like your cursor designs. I didn't think I would, but I especially like the rainbow hourglass. Somehow modern and fresh despite it being an hourglass. My only, and very minor criticism would be the text selector. It needs to be a pixel skinnier, maybe. If I'm not paying attention, it can obscure things like periods or commas. It is, however, nice and visible, so I'm not lost on that one. Great job! It's my new default.

Thanks for the video and the cursors. The one cursor I miss, from the pre-MacOS 10 days, is the little watch/clock cursor on Mac OS, which actually had enough frames to animate the hour and minute hands. I've always wanted to make my own cursor because the fact that all the ones that Windows provides are asymmetrical in multiple ways bugs me (the stick doesn't point towards the corner, the flaps on the arrowhead are different lengths, and the outline is oddly thin). I also think it's weird how low resolution and angular the text cursor looks. I am fine with the hand, loading wheel, and moving arrows though. Speaking of which, your 4-way moving arrow looks very easy to mistake for the middle-click scroll arrow

I also made my own mouse cursors, but mine cycle through a palette of pastel colors so the mouse cursor can never get lost, even against complex multicolored backgrounds. It sounds psychedelic, but the effect is much more subtle and easy to tune-out when you see it in person. You're preaching to the choir about what Windows has done to basic user preferences. It's a damn treasure hunt to find any functional preference windows in the OS, and you often have to click several levels deep to get to where you need to be. 1:56 Furthermore, the bitmap drawing to the screen is done in a coordinate system that puts the (Cartesian) origin at the top-left corner (and the x-axis across the top and the y-axis down the left edge) so the position of the rectangle that contains the pointer image is indexed by the point that the user perceives as where the click should be. (The tip of the arrow needs no further offset from the corner from which the system draws the bitmap.) This saves some computation every time the pointer is used by software.

Great video, you're great at design. This video really reassures me that im not into design and i shouldnt be wasting my time with frontend development. I mean, often times designers say "this FEELS off" and i just cant understand it. Like here 7:27 what's wrong with it? Yea, its a bit assimetric but thats it. Because of a little bit of asymmetry its now a terrible design? Also this section: 11:13 what looks wrong there? Idk man, alot of things in design seems to just come out of feeling and emotion instead of a good reason and it seems to be sooo stressful considering there'll be many design changes in the next 30 years or so. What we think looks beautiful today might look awful in 10 years and i just cant imagine working in a field so emotion driven. Sorry for the rant, its just that ive been thinking if I should stick to frontend, full stack or just backend and this video definitely showed me that i should just do backend. I literally couldnt care less if something 'looks off' or 'feels wrong' and i cant be working in a field where those are the reasons that make a product good or not. Thanks for helping me reach that conclusion

When I was in high school, I made a set of Halo themed cursors that corresponded to the different character colors from Red Vs Blue. I imported them to my work PC and use them there. There's one for each type of cursor that existed at the time (no location or person select cursor). Normal is a helmet with a little corner pointer Link select is a helmet looking at the corner pointer Working in background has the helmet spinning with a corner pointer Busy uses the same spinning helmet, but the hotspot's in the center Help select is a corner pointer with either a question mark in that armor color or a helmet with a question mark across the visor Precision, text select, handwriting, unavailable, alt select, and all resizers are all just recolors of the default icon in that armor color You can find them on my old tumblr blog, but they don't look very good if you have your PC set to use scaling at all

My theory for the tilted arrow design is hardware efficiency. Computer graphics use a grid that has its origin (0, 0) in the top left. When new images are drawn to the screen, the coordinates are specified by the top left pixel. So, instead of calculating where the tip of the cursor was every single frame, the OS just uses the location of the sprite. The design of the cursor was probably updated to make it clear that the clicking "happens" at the top left instead of the center.

This video has traveled with me through the journey to perfection of my own desktop environment - I stumbled upon a group of people who appreciate customization and improvement of ergodynamics. But I do have a request for you @posy Would you like to design a optimized Version of the classic window control buttons (Close, maximize, minimize). I always thought that they are kind of boring and with windows 11 around the corner - not even correct anymore. I mean - things like the diskette are to this day icons for saving files. But those abstract shapes do no longer represent the shapes they once had - borders are round, minimized Windows are squares... I feel like there is gap that could be bridged with a good old design thinking process. Anyways, because you have done this video out of the need for a solution for a rather specific problem, I don't think you would agree with me on this one - but maybe you do, and maybe you will design another masterpiece like your cursors! I run them on any Maschine I own

Conspicuously absent is any mention of possibly the best “busy cursor” design ever: the bee cursor in Atari’s implementation of Digital Research’s GEM GUI. Unlike Apple’s wristwatch busy cursor or Window’s hourglass cursor, the bee icon indicated that the computer was busy working on your behalf like a “busy bee,” it wasn’t simply making you wait, like both the wristwatch and hourglass cursors implied. Busy cursor designs today make it feel like the app or OS or stream has hung or has crashed - which is often true! 🐝

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who has trashed cursors and made their own. It took dedication and was only done as some of the cursors on 90's graphic design software grated on me. I used Freehand to design mine - proper old skool! 🤘

I remember when kids would download cursors on the school computers and put a million viruses on them. Good times! My favorite was the "Valentine's" one that would turn your cursor into a little heart, and you would get a trail of sparkles as it went by.

Same here. I've completely forgotten that it's a custom cursor. It's such a good and usable design.

@@strange_thing-arra-3692I'm late, but someone made a Linux version of the cursors. Linux stores its cursors as regular PNG files, so if you download those you'll have them in PNG format.

Might be worth mentioning the fact that Apple started making their cursor change scale as you use it, specifically it gets bigger when you shake it around quickly. This makes it easier to identify where the cursor is in case you forget where you left it.

The tilted arrow makes perfect sense to me - most interface elements and characters are vertical-horizontal in nature, so having the pointer at an angle makes it stand out more. I've lost the "I beam" text cursor so many times in word processors over the years, when the tilted arrow would be readily obvious.

Ah, so this is where this theme came from. I actually have it set on Linux (it became popular on the KDE store very quickly). I had no idea it came from a KZitem video, of all places. Incredible job! You actually took time to study past cursors before making your own, and the quality really shows in the final product. I respect that quite a lot!
