The 1974 Eurovision Song Contest probably had the highest number of "chartable" hits of any Eurovision. Whether that's a reflection of the quality of the Eurovision or the quality of the charts in 1974 I wouldn't like to speculate.
@TheRealTricky
6 жыл бұрын
Probably the latter. Some songs I hear in the ESC today (both the good and the bad ones) appear to reflect the current charts. I hear the same styles in the charts. Sometimes so close that despite the completely different melody I can hardly hear the difference. The 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s where the best period in commercial music, which slowly came to an end in the 1990s, and we do see that reflect on the ESC. Back in those years the charts were 90% good and 10% bad. Today it's the other way around. Also explains why it is sometimes so easy to predict the winner in the recent editions. I mean who ever doubted Sweden would win with "Euphoria"? I remember that in the older editions of the ESC the winner was a lot harder to predict. Of course, this is just my theory, as I know a lot of peeps might not agree with me. :P

@@TheRealTricky - No. I've followed the ESC for Decades. The 1974 Contest had the strongest final Top 3 of any Contest - before or since. That's why the Swedish Entry was a UK No1, and Italy, (2nd), and The Netherlands, (3rd), were UK No.8 Hits. All were strong Songs. The UK Entry, by Olivia Newton-John, was not just 4th, it was joint 4th, with 2 other Songs. In the UK Charts, her Song was a No.11 Hit. She didn't like her Song. It was chosen by BBC Viewers. She wanted the Song, that was Voted 2nd, to Enter. That was 'Angel Eyes'. Which ended up as the 'B' Side of 'Long Live Love', and the Title of a 1979 ABBA Song. ABBA thought that 'I See A Star' might Win the 1974 Contest. The BBC seemed to favour the beautiful Italian Ballad.

ALWAYS THINK OF THIS SONG AS BEING THE BEST SONG OF E.S.C IN 74 COMING SECOND TO ABBA WITH WATERLOO WHICH TO MYSELF PERSONALLY IS ONE OF THEIR WORST SONGS EVER. I WAS NEVER REALLY AN ABBA FAN. I SEE A STAR WAS A FUN LOVING CATCHY SONG WHEREAS WATERLOO WAS DULL AND BORING. THE BEST THING ABOUT ABBA WAS FRIDA SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL VIVACIOUS WOMAN AND STILL IS TODAY I GREW TO APPRECIATE ABBA MORE AS I GOT OLDER AND LOOKING BACK RELISED HOW GOOD THEY REALLY WERE. I STILL DONT THINK THAT THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN AS BIG IF IT WAS NOT FOR EUROVISION. THEY HAD LOT OF BETTER SONGS BEFORE WATERLOO BUT THEY WERE NOT REALLY HEARD OF IN ENGLAND. SO THEY GOT THEIR BIG BREAK AND EVERYTHING WAS ABBA AND MORE ABBA I SEE A STAR WAS RARELY GIVEN ANY AIRPLAY NOT IN ENGLAND ANYWAY. YET STILL REMAINS ONE OF FAVOURITE SONGS TODAY 13/8/21 HOW DO YOU DO SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE PUBLICITY EVEN THOUGH IT DID MAKE THE CHARTS. ID ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF THE NATURAL BEAUTIFUL MARISKA VERES AND STILL BELIEVE THAT IF MARISKA AND SHOCKING BLUE WERE GIVEN THE BREAK AS WITH ABBA THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN HAS BIG AS THEM IF NOT BIGGER. NOT BEEN INTERESTED IN MUSIC FOR AT LEAST 20-30 YEARS WE WILL NEVER GET THOSE YEARS BACK. YET THE YOUNGER GENERATION HARP ON ABOUT THE OLD MUSIC BEING BORING AND OUT DATED WHAT THEY DONT RELISE IS THAT OUTDATED BORING MUSIC IS STILL BEING SANG AND PLAYED TODAY BY TODAYS ARTISTS ONLY IN A DIFFERENT FORMAT BUT STILL THE SAME SONG FROM ALL THOSE YEARS AGO. MUSIC CRITICS NEED TO PUT THEIR HEADS UP THEIR OWN ARSES AND LISTEN TO THEIR OWN WIND. OR AS ABBA WOULD SAY MONEY MONEY MONEY IS ALL THEY THINK OF. £££££.

@@harryhackney6416 Caps lock stuck? Apart from that, I mostly agree with your views on the '74 ESC and Abba. However, I think Abba would have made it with or without the Eurovision win. An interesting fact is that after "Waterloo" went to No. 1 in the UK in the spring of 1974, Abba didn't have another No.1 until 1976. In fact, one of their songs "Honey, Honey", charted in the UK in 1974 being sung by a group called "Sweet Dreams". For me, the song which got Abba back onto the UK record buying public's radar was "SOS", which charted towards the end of 1975.

When I look at this video and see the "chemistry" between the two, I must admire their professionality. Their image was their smiling to each other, like they were in love with each other. The truth is that not only Willem Duyn (Mouth) was old enough to be Sjoukje van 't Spijker's (McNeal) father, but they also hated each other with passion, and then doing this, looking happy together, singing a very cheerful song, just because we expect them to do so, you've no idea how hard that is. Rest in peace, Willem "Big Mouth" Duyn.

@@Texaslawhorn I've tried to figure out why the two never liked each other, but what I could find in several Dutch resources is vague at best. I do know that Mouth called her "Zangeres zonder tieten" (Songstress without boobs), or at least that was what I could find somewhere. I do know that their mutual hatred was even the reason they split up, even though they were at the peak of their success back then, and everybody agreed they could have had more hits. After the split up Mouth continued with Little Eve, and it seems that worked out better, since Little Eve would eventually become his wife. Mouth would later have a solo career under his real name Willem Duyn and also sing in Dutch and eventually died of heart failures at the age of 67. He was however never as successful anymore as he was with McNeal. The Dutch Wikipedia stated this: "Op 21 maart 2012 verscheen de biografie Duo Tegen Wil En Dank, geschreven door voormalig fanclubvoorzitter Roel Smit. In het boek wordt een publiek geheim bevestigd: de muzikale successen ten spijt, konden Duyn en Smit elkaar privé niet luchten of zien". Roughly translated it means "March 2st, 2012 the biography of the duo was released "Tegen Wil en Dank". This this book a public secret was being confirmed: in spite of their musical successes, Duyn and Smit (McNeal's surname after marriage) couldn't stand each other in private at all." The name of the book is a bit hard to translate, but it's a bit of an idiom meaning you are doing things that you absolutely don't want to do or that you are stuck with something or somebody you hate (Literally it means "Against will and thanks"). I've never read this book myself, and I do not know if an English translation of it is available.

This was a top 10 hit in the UK, unusual for any non-UK Eurovision entry to be a hit but especially for one that didn't even win, and it was a bigger UK hit than our own entry which only reached #11 in the UK chart. I do prefer "How Do You Do" to this song and also Waterloo but still back then we did see more established artists being entered for Eurovision with this duo having had a top 10 hit in the USA 2 years earlier.
