I had exactly the same issue, my primary SSD had bad sectors and I got a new SSD, to make sure new SSD is healthy, I connected it to the PC and ran few checks. After that I reinstalled OS on the new SSD and after few hours I realised the mess i was in… I checked in KZitem and after going through few unrelated issues landed on this link…. Blindly followed the process and got the issue resolved… thank you for the great tutorial 🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💐

@@theapplecanfly make sure to mark the old system reserved drive as inactive FIRST before deleting! if your system is able to boot with the old system reserved drive inactive, then that means your PC is now booting through the new drive. Then you can delete the old system reserved partition. for the recovery stuff, that depends if you want it to be in the same drive as the recovery drive. I just ignored it because my only concern is to move my system reserved partition from my mechanical drive to my SSD. But the two stuff are not related at all, you can do one or the other without having to do the other.

I was using a GPT formatted disk for this issue and with a bit of help from chatgpt I got it working. The disk on its own is not said as Primary Partition instead Basic Data Partition and the new 1 GB of space you create will be called data partition and you also can not set it to active. You also don't have to disable the other disks system partition just unplug it at the next restart so the system doesn't even search it. When you list the partitions in DISKPART you will get the Type correctly listing system instead of Primary like in the video. The partitions Type is different on GPT so instead of 27 FOR ME it was EFI System partition: c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b (that's the ID you need). It may wary so you can enter the HELP SET command and it lists everything you need. I'm not a pro so this may not be correct information for everyone, make sure to check online for more guides if you're unsure.

Thank you so much bro, I confirmed with my old HDD and the EFI System partition had the exact same ID as the one you listed. I then just set the new partition on my new hard disk to have that ID, overrided it and then restarted PC. I also unplugged my old disk to make sure I'm booting off of the new one only plus I also set the new disk as the default boot in the bios setting. Everything is working great and I no longer need my old disk to boot. I'll leave it unplugged for now or maybe in the future reformat it and use it as a file backup. Again, thank you very much kind stranger.

My man, huge thank you for this video. I was unable to install Windows 11 as my drive was set up as an MBR. When trying to use the MBR2GPT tool I always got validation errors even though I was attempting to use it on my OS drive and had less than three partitions. I noticed that my boot drive was on a different disk than my OS drive which cause the tool to fail. I transferred the boot drive to the OS drive and I can happily say my system is finally updated to Windows 11. ¡MASSIVE THANKS AGAIN!

Wow!! This helped. I just went through 2 days of work installing windows and all my apps on to a new SSD after I was unable to boot off my current one (possibly a corrupt boot sector). After all that work, I began to clean up the other drives that were on the workstation. Everything looked great and I shut down. When I tried to restart, the system would not boot. I went to a recovery command windows and, using Diskpart, discovered that there was not boot sector or information on the new drive. I found this post and realized that I had already formatted the drive that had help my boot information. I then removed all my drives and left the old drive in. I installed windows 11 to that drive. I then reattached my new drive where I had previously installed windows and all my apps. I booted from the Windows start USB (or DVD), and opened the Console again. What I found is that Windows did not create a System Partition on the new bootable installation. Instead in place all the boot files on the single Primary Partition. I found those file (dir /a:h /a:s....) and copied them to the Primary (and only) partition on my target drive. You may need to clear the System, Hidden attributes to do this, and then reset them on the target after the copy. I removed the temporary windows installation drive. I was able to see the new drive as bootable in my BIOS (positive sign!!!) When I rebooted, windows could not start and presented a message suggesting that I start from recovery disk. I started again from the installation USB and went to "Repair" . It immediately rebooted. I removed the installation USB and it booted from the new Drive. Is it OK to have everything on my Primary partition? Disk Management shows a single partition marked System, Boot, Page File, Active, Dump, Primary Partition) Should I shrink that and move everything to a separate partition, or just leave it alone.

Even I installed windows to my SSD, all these "System", "MSR(Reserved)" and "Recovery" was still in HDD and as my HDD had some issues, it shows that no bootable device found in the startup 😢.... My boot loader is on my old Windows 10 M.2 drive. While Windows 11 is on my new one. The recovery partition is on the right new m.2 drive, but the bootloader is on the old. Is the bootloader on the 100MB (EFI System Partition)? Can I shrink my new Windows 11 m.2 installation and do the steps you mentioned to create bootloader on it? Or so it can boot, since it can't if I deactivate the old M.2 drive in BIOS. It needs to load that bootloader in order to be able to boot into new WIndows. Should I just shrink it at 100-150MB, so there is space for the bootloader, or does it take up more space? Kind regards

Just wanted to add my thanks to the many here. I have an older computer, with an SSD I'd already put in as a boot drive, and two somewhat old HDDs. I wanted to replace the HDDs in case of failure, as they are getting on for 15 years old at least, and had an older SSD to hand. Despite having told it to boot from the first SSD (and I'd always assumed that it was doing so), it was actually booting from the HDD but, it seems, writing to the SSD after that. Trying to boot from the SSD directly would always result in failure ("reboot and select proper boot device"). I seemed to remember having this issue when I put the first SSD in. As I was cloning all the HDDs onto the second SSD, I didn't need to make the old partition on the HDD inactive (as it'd boot off the second SSD in that case, I assume - but I just made sure my boot priorities are set properly in the BIOS). So I just needed to shrink the volume on the first SSD, create a new partition from that freed up space, format that partition, and then I used the BCDBOOT command as directed to create the necessary boot files on the new partition. There was already a recovery partition on there so I assume I am now all set. I've tried it a few times and things seem OK with no HDDs attached anymore. :)

This made my PC unbootable. It gave the error "No bootable device found" at the start. If someone went into the same issue after following the above steps you can recover the system with a Windows DVD or a bootable USB. Plug in the bootable device and boot from that device. Then go to the repair. Where you can open a command prompt and reverse what you have done previously. (just activating the old 'active' partition and making the newly activated partition 'inactive').

Hello! If my recovery partition is already in the drive that i want and only want to move the system reserved, Can i skip the setid=27 part? I noticed it changed to recovery from primary when you did it.
@mattscomp

You still should do the setid 27 for the recovery partition. Don't skip that step.

What do I do if both system partition and recovery partition end up on the secondary drive? Should I move the recovery partition as well ?

It helped me greatly to relocate the system reserved drive to my 970 evo+ from my old ssd, but I'm having another issue prior to that. Suddenly my windows loading time has become 25-30 seconds from 3-5 seconds. Any ideas how I can mitigate this issue? after bios loading, windows logo should not be loading for 25-30 seconds in 970 evo+. FYI, all other drives are at 100% health and the nvme is as fast as day 1 in everything else except the windows loading. Thanks and any solution is appreciated.

There could be many reasons for that. Ensure SSD is first in the boot priority. Partition alignment could be another reason. Sure shot solution is fresh installation.

I have the issue 'mbr2gpt cannot find OS partition(s) for disk 0' , thing is that I have the system reserved to disk 0 (no OS) whereas I have the OS in Disk 1 without the system reserved (just the OS+the Recovery partition only) having the exact same wrong allocation as in the video,. If I will follow this guide will the Mbr2gpt conversion work? thx

This is how tutorials should be for people who understand what they want and just want to do it. I am one of the "IT Army" and I can say for all of us that we don't have google inside our heads but we know what we need to do if a reasonable person (like you) just shows us the steps. THANK YOU and I have subscribed.
