This might be my favorite Ghibli movie. I think Kiki losing the ability to communicate with Jiji is meant to symbolize her growing up. As someone else in the comments pointed out, there is an earlier American version where, among a myriad of other changes/additions, Disney shoehorned in a line at the end suggesting that maybe Jiji had started talking again, but the dub that's available now is much more in keeping with what was originally intended.

Oh really ? In the french version, he doesn't talk in the end but he's funnier because his voice is more childhish and high-pitched

I disagree with not having Jiji talk in the Japanese version because by having Kiki still able to speak with him it shows how she is more mature than when she began, but still is able to hold onto her inner childhood. Thankfully I own the 2003 Disney DVD release with the good Dub with the Sidney Forest songs and Phil Hartman’s extra dialogue.

It's weird because in the french version, Jiji's voice is more high-pitched so it sounds childish, and the other witch is more friendly

I don't like how one version of the dubbing left out so many lines, particularly at the end after Kiki saves Tombo. Sure, she could fly again but one version has Gigi speaking to Kiki again while another has him still sounding like a cat

The lines you're talking about were never supposed to be part of the movie. When Disney first did the English dubbing for Kiki's Delivery Service, they ADDED a bunch of extra dialogue that wasn't in the Japanese version, including the implication that Jiji could speak to Kiki again at the end. They also added new music and goofy sound effects. The newer release cut all that stuff out to make it more faithful to Miyazaki's vision. Personally, I'm glad they did.

@@rocketdave719 Still, why make it seem like Kiki could never talk again with Gigi? Losing that kind of connection is terrible

@@SilverScribe85 It is rather bittersweet, but it's intended to symbolize the fact that Kiki is taking steps towards becoming an adult. I believe the way Miyazaki explained it, Jiji is meant to be like a reflection of Kiki's inner thoughts and that now that she's learning how to make it on her own, she doesn't need to rely on him in the same way anymore.

@@rocketdave719 But in terms of witch powers, communicating with animals is often one of them (or at least, it is in a lot of the Cozy Fantasy books I've read.) How can Kiki become a full witch if she loses one of her abilities

@@SilverScribe85 I don't know what to tell you. Clearly, the magical rules in Kiki's world aren't all the same as in certain other fantasy stories.
