Love these casual think piece videos! I can't exactly explain why, but I'm very inclined to agree with you: There's something that just feels so damn good about a perfect trilogy. I think especially in the present era of cinematic universes, there's something so satisfying about a perfectly wrapped story in three parts; not overstaying their welcome, but having just enough substance to feel like one grand story.

Man I’ve got to say that I’ve been watching for a while, (just subscribed) and you’re videos are always lots of fun. I want to someday be able to do what you do here with comics on my own channel. Thanks for these amazing videos and I’m ready to see more! (PS the reason I’m commenting on this video is since this is the first video of yours I saw).

Trilogies you should do videos for both good and bad: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Spider-Man Trilogy, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy, Madagascar Trilogy, Planet of the Apes Trilogy, Star Wars Original Trilogy, Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Night At The Museum Trilogy, Spongebob Trilogy, Cars Trilogy, Iron Man Trilogy, Captain America Trilogy, Thor Trilogy (I know there’s a fourth), Narnia Trilogy.

I just had this thought (after The Weeknd announced After Hours, Dawn FM are part of a trilogy) and decided to Google it and I’m glad someone made a video about this. Making things in 3s feels just right. Nothing more, nothing less.

I will say that the indiana jones trilogy was sorta planned ahead of time but it was like the bare minimum. Apparently when George lucas and Steven Spielberg agreed on making raiders of the lost ark, George said that if Steven diretcs the first movie that he would have to direct a trilogy. Aside from that nothing else was planned ahead of time.

I feel like the Kung Fu Panda trilogy really nails this philosophy you laid out here. I hope they never make a Kung Fu Panda 4 because I am satisfied with the story that was told in the 3 films. The third film is the weakest one but it did do a good job at ending the story on a satisfying note.

The second film is my favorite because of how it got more into the worldbuilding, had a fantastic villain, and had a lot of thematic meaning, talking about things like PTSD and trauma.

On the Matrix dvds, there’s an audio commentary (ac) from 2 philosophers (highly recommended,) but they kept saying the trilogy was planned from the start. It’s pretty obvious this channel has it correctly: Welp trilogy

Batman Begins, Spider-Man and Rise of the Planet of the Apes were definitely planned to have sequels probably in Trilogy form from the Star. The MCU did invent Superhero movie preplanning. Star Wars is endlessly debated but regardless of certain twists Lucas always planned for there to be more. LOTR isn't a Trilogy, in both Book and Movie form it's simply one really long story that had to split up for publication because it was too long. The writing in the Star Wars Prequels is perfect, Anakin's lines make you cringe because they're supposed to. The Three Act structure is a largely Western Thing, Japan is more inclined to think in 4 Act structures which Pause and Select did a video on.

Yes, every studio wants their movies to be successful and spawn sequels, you're right. But none of those movies were initially pitched, created, and produced as a trilogy. They are not trilogies where the production set out specifically to make a trilogy. In researching the Batman trilogy, Spider-Man trilogy, and Apes trilogy it's clear that they weren't planned as trilogies. They were made one at a time with vague hopes for sequels. It's the intent and planning that sets the LotR films apart as a blueprint trilogy. I know the books were split up because of publishing at the time of release, but the films were planned and produced as a three part story.

@@ItsGregKon Maybe our disagreement here lies in that MCU films are not actually as pre planned as you think they are. They knew vaguely it was gonna be about Infinity Stones and Thanos but I do not think even the gist of Endgame was remotely in mind when Age of Ultron was filming. It's the same with Raimi and and Nolan's trilogies, certain details were in flux, but Nolan always knew the next step was gonna involve Joker and Harvey and kill Rachel and Raimi always knew on some level Harry Osborn's Goblin arc was gonna be spanned the Trilogy.
@ItsGregKon

That's fair, Raimi and Nolan could have had a trilogy in mind. But WB/Sony certainly did not until they saw the returns on the most recent release. I'm thinking more along the lines of the production not yet being geared up for each following movie. Marvel studios absolutely has the next few productions planned in terms of how they'll connect, even if the specific details of the next event movie aren't set in stone. You can literally see their slated movies for the next ten or so years. That level of production planning did not happen for Nolan's or Raimi's trilogies.

I disagree w the channel on 1 point: the entire key y we love trilogies is because of the ancient Greeks. They influenced Western storytelling forever afterwards. Remember the Greeks Invented plays. Obviously by now nearly everyone understands 3 act stories bc through the centuries, they were told
