Thanks for your recommendations of lesser known films. Haunting of Julia was a real hidden gem.

Hi Roger and Happy Holidays. Thank you for all the great reviews this year, especially your 1973 series and your reviews on a number of Truffaut films. I ordered "Story of Adele H" as a blind buy after seeing your review and was awestruck by Isabelle Adjani, who was also magnificent in "Camille Claudel". Enjoy the holiday season and we'll look forward to more great stuff in 2024.

Thank you so much. I am taking a break in December from posting videos but I am busy planning what I want to do in 2024. I most enjoy doing mini-series of actors and directors and coincidentally have been looking at Isabelle Adjani for one of those. Camille Claudel (which I have never seen) would be included and also Queen Margot. Still looking for a third. Have a great holiday season!

Thanks for all of the videos this year! I look forward to your book reviews, as you are one of the few who often read the source material for films (which is much appreciated). I was pleasantly surprised recently when I watched Kino's 4K release of "The Apartment"--one that I just had never seen, great performances and Shirley Maclaine was a cutie with her chopped short haircut.

So happy to hear you are enjoying my videos and thanks so much for your long term support of the channel. I have never made a video on The Apartment but it is one of my all time favorites (movie-wise!). Shirley MacLaine is so captivating, but what did she see in Mr. Sheldrake? I love the ending but I love just about every scene in the film. I don’t have it on 4K. For sure a 2024 purchase. Have a great holiday season!

HI Roger...I have to tell you I took the recommendation for COUNSELLOR AT LAW and I loved it..what a great movie!. All the characters, the dialog and the actors, just great. John Barrymore really is amazing and he had a terrible memory problem, had to reshoot many scenes several times, but you'd never know when watching. I found Bebe Daniels terrific too as his devoted secretary Rexy. By the way, I noted one scene in common with Wyler's THE DESPERATE HOURS, when Barrymore is very upset and preoccupied, Rexy asks if there's anything she can do. "You can mind your own business!" he shouts....the exact same thing happens with Fredric March and his secretary in the 1955 film...Thanks for discussing this gem of a movie!

So happy to hear you enjoyed Counselor, Jay. That is an interesting connection between Counselor and Desperate Hours. Wyler is great at creating tension in enclosed spaces that result in characters on edge. Thanks for being a loyal supporter of my channel, and have a great holiday season.

The film that surprised me the most in 2023 was Gina (1975) released on Blu Ray by Vinegar Syndrome. I nearly turned this off a couple of times but stuck with it and realised it was a lot smarter than I’d earlier assumed. Definitely brutal but also with a lot of humanity.

I have never seen Gina but I have seen an earlier movie from the director, Jesus of Montreal. I will try to check it out.

I only saw five films released in 2023, and some of them I watched online instead of at the theater. The most memorable film of this year, at least for me, was SOUND OF FREEDOM. My most pleasant surprise was James Whale's BY CANDLELIGNT (1933), which I picked up from Kino. It's one of the most delightful films in my recent memory. When it ended, I found myself applauding and laughing because I had such a great time watching it. I was also pleasantly surprised by COUNSELLOR AT LAW, which I picked up following recommendations from you and Mike Dague. Triangle of Sadness sounds interesting. Do you see a triangle of sadness on my face when you watch my videos? I'm aware of having a very sad face! Have a wonderful holiday season and New Year, Roger. Looking forward to seeing you in 2024!

I have never heard of By Candlelight. I don’t know how that passed me by when it was released on bluray. I am definitely picking that up soon. I am planning on streaming some 2023 films during my youtube holiday break. I don’t want to fall too far out of touch with the contemporary film world. I went back and sampled some of your videos to see if you had a “triangle of a sadness”. It was difficult to determine as the brim of your cap casts a shadow over your upper face. But as far as I can tell you have widely spaced parallel lines, Don’t know what any of that signifies but let’s say a “paralellogram of happiness”! Have a great Christmas, Mike. It’s been a pleasure having you as a youtube friend.

Hi Roger. That’s a great selection. As you say, whether it’s a new watch or revisiting a film you saw a long time ago, it’s wonderful to have that feeling of being really surprised how good the film is. I still keep meaning to rewatch I Confess, it has been a long time. Out of those others the only one I have seen is Triangle of Sadness which I had been a bit wary of having not really loved Ostlund’s previous films, but I loved it. I do have The Trial to watch too. 2023 has also been my starting point with Jacques Rivette (I now have a few in my collection to watch after watching La Belle Noiseuse) and you have encouraged that interest with your comments on his other films. Thank you for sharing your opinions and interest throughout the year. Best wishes for the holidays

Thanks so much Neil. I didn’t really care for Ostlund’s other films either so I was surprised. Triangle has many vivid scenes that I can recall as if I had seen it last night. I like spreading the word on Rivette and have now seen most of his work but I tried and whiffed once again last month in completing my way through his 11+ hour Out 1 which some of his fans believe is his masterpiece. It is streaming on kanopy. Have a great holiday season!

@@RogerKirby13 Oh wow, Out 1 is lonnng, Rivette certainly doesn’t make short films. I will work my way up to that one…perhaps! Kanopy seems great, I only realised a few months ago that I could access it via my library. Lots of great titles.

Greetings Roger! Many thanks for the very interesting review of films that surprised you in the year 2023. I'm obviously just playing catch-up now as we're into the second week of February 2024. Of the ten you chose to highlight, I'm happy to say that I possess or had previously ordered seven of them. The three others, Counsellor-At-Law, The Haunting of Julia, and Secret Defense have just now been ordered. I have not viewed any of them as yet but the other seven are in cue to view. Similar to yourself I find myself surprised by a number of films that I viewed at an earlier time but with the passing of time my ability to contextualize has improved them. My own most recent viewing experience was the 2005 film, Match Point, directed by Woody Allen and featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Emily Mortimer. Set in England, the character played by Meyers is a former tennis pro who has fallen on hard times. He accidentally becomes intermingled with and subsequently marries into a very rich family whose patriarch is played by Brian Cox. The Meyers character has an affair that has dire consequences for all. While all of the characters are in their own way lousy people the film's centre is the emphasis that luck plays on our lives. This is one of Allen's best films. My most recent film acquisition is 2021's The Worst Person In The World, featuring Renate Reinsve, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Herbert Nordrum. Thank you again for the look back at 2023 and have a great start to your week!

Hi Chris. You are so right about how movies can look different as we age. The great thing is that they evoke an era better than a history book could ever do. Especially the 1970s when I was in my twenties, full of myself as an amateur critic, eager to cast judgement. It amazes me how good these movies look today, such a surge of creativity. I love Match Point and I agree it is one of Woody’s best. The Worst Person in the World was one of my favorites of 2021. Thanks as always for your terrific comments and take care.

Thank you for your inspirations. I was very surprised by this legendary movie in 2023 I heard of it, but never saw it the screenplay is by a woman. It is amazing, how many women have been successful screenplay writers at that time. A man showing so intense feelings despite all that wokeism going on it is stil unreached yet a hundred years later kzitem.info/news/bejne/p5CFq2GHm5uWd2U Have a nice Chrismas and a Happy New Year as well !
