Hiya! I've been following you and watching your videos since the beginning of the year (which is when I started having an interest in Ant Keeping) and I've just adored your videos! You, Ants Canada, and a few small ant channels are the reason why I'm starting to adore ant keeping as a hobby. I'm from your neighboring country - New Zealand and by the end of this year hopefully, I'll be moving to Sydney around the North Shore region and I was wondering, where abouts was the bush walk you found the Bull Ant in and do you have any tips and tricks to when (their nuptial flight), where (best places in Sydney / AUS to find Q ants, and how (identification) to find a Bull ant Queen? Thanks!!

Use the longer (20-30 cm) stainless steel tweezers it’ll help you maneuver the smaller opening.

Ofcourse! I bought it from a pet store (Petbarn). It was pretty expensive though, I can’t remember how much now. What I loved about it was it was safe for ants. Plus the red colour is amazing!

Well you are honestly spoilt for choice! I find the best places are parks of bushland that have never been developed for housing. Go to bush track or walking trail and scan the footpath. Eventually you will find queens getting around! Good Luck!

If I am finding a queen walking around is there a chance that she will not be pregnant? Would be good to pick your brain if you have another platform to email exc.

Your luck to catch the exact queen you've been looking for is incredible! I've been inclined to believe that luck is the most important aspect of catching queens so good luck to you this nuptial season! Have a great one and I can't wait for more!

@the ant keeper I put my ants into hibernation and aren’t doing so well they only have 3 workers do you think I should take them out
@TheDragonBloom
2 жыл бұрын
No, if you have already put them into hibernation you should leave them in hibernation. I know I'm not keeper you were asking but I do have experience with keeping ants. Disrupting the ants natural cycle of hibernation can cause excess stress and send the colony into collapse. I know the stress of sending them into hibernation with minimal workers can and will cause anxiety on the part of the keeper but you must have faith that they will be okay. Bringing them out of hibernation a few weeks early shouldn't cause them too much stress however so if you're still worried about them in a couple of months I'd suggest slowly heating their nest for a couple of weeks. If you have any other concerns I'd be glad to talk it out with you.
@Dawg1717

@@TheDragonBloom ok thanks I have kept them in hibernation for 2 to 3 months how much longer do you think
@TheDragonBloom
2 жыл бұрын
@@Dawg1717 If they have already been in hibernation for at least 2 months you should be fine bringing them out whenever you'd like. Just begin raising the temperature in their nest slowly over the next couple of weeks until they are back to springtime temperatures. It may take the queen quite a bit of time to fully wake up so don't be discouraged if all the workers wake up and the queen still hasn't awakened after a week or so. If there's anything else, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck!

Hey thanks for making this video. So my son has recently fallen in love with this and we have purchased a set up the same. I'm curious how did you know that and was a queen?
@TheAntKeeper
Жыл бұрын
hey Jarryd! That's awesome, he'll have thousands of hours of fun and learn so much. I know it a queen from experience, but generally the shape and structure of the ant is the giveaway. For example, the pastor(bum) is quite large and almost drags along the ground, she has wing scars on her back and her head is well propertied to the rest of her body (not tiny in comparison). The wing scars are the easiest and fastest way to tell if an ant is a queen or not. I hope this helps. ps. I like your videos, they're great. Well done on the editing!

Thank you for sharing this update. we thought we found a queen the other day but upon reflection, we feel like we are incorrect after your advice. Any tips for catching a queen? My son also went off your insight and purchased a medium ytong nest from aus ants. Thanks for checking out my videos. Appreciate that kind words. P.s Sorry for the late reply.
