I moved to Seattle from Minnesota in 1991. The Seattle Freeze is very real, very different from the town of 2,500 dairy farmers I moved from. The best thing and the worst thing about Seattle was that “nobody cared.”

As someone who lives in the Pacific Northwest, it's not the rain itself that is horrible. It is the constant overcast skies and lack of sun that can really take a toll on many people. Because of our northernly latitude, we get very short days in the winter but long days in the summer. Going to work when its dark and dreary and coming home from work when its dark and dreary can make it unpleasant for many people. Most of the rainy days are concentrated between October and May. June through September is wonderful, very sunny but also quite hot. One of the major things I miss about the East Coast are thunderstorms and actually enjoying the rain after a very hot summer. Hearing the sound of thunderstorms at night was awesome.

About the "Seattle Freeze" - this may or may not be relevant, but I remember reading something about that in some small magazine around 1992. The article said they used to be so friendly and welcoming until the grunge music scene turned Seattle into a Mecca for teens and twentysomethings. (Also they mentioned a lot of runaway teens going to Portland, similar to the way kids would leave home for SF in the 60s). They said Seattle was overwhelmed by people coming from everywhere wanting to be part of the music scene and not leaving. I remember this particular article because a friend had recently done that exact thing and I mailed him the article. Edit - Also, thanks for treating people nicely on both sides of politics. You're one of the few on here who treats both sides the same in your videos. You make jokes about both sides, which is something I remember people always doing and is normal, but you say things like "if you're right leaning this would be good for you and if your left leaning this other place would be good for you" and you don't put in a little dig to only one side, consistently, like lots of KZitemrs do. 80% of Seattle drivers are overly cautious to a fault, 15% are regular decent drivers, and 5% think they are on Fast and the furious. You can hear them congregate on late nights. Most of the freeway traffic is self imposed as I-5 will be backed up but will often have many vehicles with 5+ car lengths between them. Hey Briggs, speaking of Alaska, where I lived for 22 years, let me give you a bit of recent anecdotal information. I lived in Haines for 22 years. In my opinion, the best small town in Alaska. 70 miles up the fjord from Juneau. A small (not insane) but thriving tourism and cruise ship economy in the summer, accounting for one third of the economy. Haines absolutely does not get the crime of the Anchorage area. And for the years I lived there (until 2018) the housing prices were relatively stable and affordable. With the natural world, strong community, and much lower latitude, it was an incredible place to live. Then I left... probably the cause of all of the future woe. I left NYC then 9/11 came. I recently went back to send some of my stuff across the oceans to Georgia (NOT the US state). First the pandemic came in 2020. And for 2 years there was no tourism. Then in December 2020 came the biggest rainstorm that anyone in living memory could remember. 2 people died when a side of mountain came down. Home were demolished. Then by 2023 officially over 420 and left the entire Chilkat Valley area, which when I left in 2018 had a 2,500 population. Then came the horrendous inflation. Prices were higher when I lived there, but now??? And with that home prices were jacked, even though many sit empty. My friends say it's a depression. Home prices are being artificially inflated by people desperate to get the money they put into their homes. But that market will tumble in a year or two. Anyway... it's still a great place, better natural sights than a majority of national park, great community, the weather isn't too bad, think better than the great lakes area, no crime worth discussing, and some younger people have been moving up there. The tourism economy is slowly coming back. But this would be a great place for people who can work from home, or who need real nature and animals. It's the kind of place certain folks want to raise children in. And dogs have rights too.

@@WorldAccordingToBriggs What makes Haines better is that you don't have to run the gauntlet of diamond stores. Holland America and Princess have ships that stop in Haines. I highly recommend it. And if you come in the later part of the summer you CAN see bears. And tones of eagles. By the way pro-tip: take the ferry from Bellingham. Get a cabin on the ocean side. Then wonder around and just get into conversations. And it's the easiest thing to do. You only need to ask one question to have an amazing conversation: Why are you going to Alaska. Go all the way to Haines. The first day is quiet with no stops. Then stay in Haines for a week, there is plenty to do in the summer. Raft trips, jetboat tours, bear viewing, hiking trails (not near the bear zone), local brewery (get the spruce tip ale or the root beer), a distillery, two great pizza places, the first military base in Alaska, Tlingit carving, rent a car and go over the border into Canada, to the mountains, to Whitehorse in the Yukon, etc. Glaciers, mountains, rivers, fjords, moose, five kinds of salmon, state fair. Just go Briggs! Look it up.

Moved here in 2018, this video is spot on. The freeze is real, but we did get a house with some great neighbors. People would rather look at the ground than acknowledge another person for the most part. The gloom got me in 2023. It was cloudy and rained from October 22 to June 23. I was over it and ready to leave. I was excited to move here so i could hike and explore. That was until i found out that the trailheads are hotbeds for break-ins. Did it happen in IL? Sure, but not to this level. Politically, it's way farther left than IL is/was. Taxes here are more hidden than other places. May not have an income tax, but the gas tax is nuts and now we have the long term care tax. Sales tax is comparable to IL, but slightly highere here. Property taxes here are less than IL, 3500 vs 5500, while home prices are about double what we left.

Not sure where in IL you’re from, but I’ll second that on the property taxes. I was considering moving back to my hometown of Champaign at one point, but when I looked at a comparable condo to what I have in Kent (2BR/1BA 850 sq ft), it was 2/3 the price, but almost EXACTLY the same when it came to property taxes. Illinois’s gas tax is starting to creep up to Washington’s levels too. So yeah…going back to my roots is becoming less and less appealing.

Regarding the politics: it was never mentioned how much the eastern part of the state is different from the western part. The east is much more Republican leaning but is largely ignored due to being overshadowed by the almighty Seattle, plus the Electoral College system means that the east's voices never get heard on a national level. You may have even heard that some people in eastern Washington (and Oregon) wish they could secede from their respective states and join Idaho.

@@TheRobdarling You mean the roads and bridges that haven't been maintained since the 70's! The politicians just keep adding taxes and the liberals don't care. More taxes per capita are raised in Central and Eastern Washington than in Western Washington. This is due to having more business owners per capita 3x as many as Western Washington. Washington would lose 44% of its revenue if everything from the top of the Cascades east left the state. If both Eastern Washington and Oregon were to join Idaho it would increase Idaho's revenue by 800%. Vancouver and Portland may be just across the river from one another but are very different. Portland and Seattle are much more similar, being very liberal, and bigger cities. Vancouver and Seattle are very different. Vancouver is more like a big town. Have lived in Vancouver for 17 years and I don't go into Portland unless I have to and haven't considered visiting the Seattle area as a tourist for a long time, especially now because of how much of it got burned and destroyed, along with a lot of it's reputation. It was cruel and hateful what they allowed against it's taxpayers, property and business owners. Big thing, both of those areas have constantly terrible traffic. I don't even stop for fast food in Portland because of the craziness, the nutty people everywhere, crime, prostitutes out during broad daylight, including the bizarre and grimy looking fast food workers.... wouldn't want them anywhere near my food. I didn't intend to reply so harshly about the area, I take it all for granted, it is what it is, but was taken aback about saying they're the same, because I also took for granted everyone knew they were very different places to live, work, relax and enjoy.

This video was hilarious to watch. As a transplant from FL to WA for over a decade now, a lot of these reasons were the exact reasons why I moved to WA. The weather is amazing here in Western WA. We get sun from about end of May, early June to the beginning of October, with no humidity or mosquitoes and cool summer high temps that rarely get above 80 until that mini pesky weeklong “heatwave” hits in late July or August where it can hit the 90s but fizzles out by nightfall. We don’t get earthquakes. The last one that anyone could feel was in 2001. (Knock on wood). St Helen’s is more likely to blow before Rainier. Ferries are part of the Seattle charm, are you seriously putting that as a negative? In one day you can drive from the pacific coast like Ocean Shores or Ruby Beach drive to skiing in Snoqualmie & chill at a beach in the city like Alki or golden gardens & catch a play or sporting event in downtown Seattle. Not too many places offer that kind of High Quality of Life. Is it expensive? Yes. Are there homeless in parts of downtown? Yes. It’s the Westcoast after all, but still a lot better than 2021/2022. Is traffic bad? Yes, but we have light rail, the most efficient buses in the country, commuter rail during rush hour and ferries, not to mention a killer bike lane system. And this guy mentioned legalized weed as a negative…I can’t 😂. The only con I can see is a high cost of living and a desire to be somewhere sunny 90% of the year which is gonna give you no where near as much greenery as Western WA. Since the video guy is a ex Cali current Portlander he should know the pros of the PNW far outweigh the cons & should make more positive videos highlighting the region instead of highlighting “right wing” gotcha moments about left wing cities. Just saying.

Coming from a Western Washingtonian for over 30 years. The rain isn't THAT bad. We have long drizzle days, but Texas can rain more (ounces) in a day than WA can in a whole year. But the Seattle freeze is no lie. I've lived as far south as Lacey and as far north as Redmond, and people are way less social and are more introverted in the Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond area than in Pierce and Thurston County. Even a work colleague of mine who moved from NY even noticed and thought it's weird. Most people I know who live in the Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond area don't really like to travel south of Renton like Tacoma or Puyallup. They don't even know what the state capital is. SMH! Traffic has gotten worse tho in the last 10+ years. A couple years ago I decided to move a couple miles from work to a higher cost of living area cause I was commuting 3-4 hours a day, 15-20 hours a week and I'm not exaggerating about those numbers, and I have NO REGRETS about making that move. Especially when I think about not having to commute anymore, it's like weight lifting off my shoulders cause that commute was mentally draining. I can go on and on about living in WA, tho. 😂
