When Ron Greenwood first became manager back in the mists of time he changed the emphasis of training from fitness to skills. Putting it another way, Ron Greenwood invented the 'West Ham way' which didn't always win but was always a joy to watch. He won the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup, developed the careers of three England WC winners and passed it all on to John Lyall, who kept the flame burning brightly. Until David Moyes, no one came within a light year of matching those two immortals but Moyes got very close at times.

I do and remember the many ups & downs of being a West Ham fan under Ron Greenwood & Johnny Lyall. In simpler times is was great to be a Hammer in the mid 60's & 70's (though everything was better in the 70's) and throughout the 80's but when it was bad it was bad. Moyes highlighted the problem that has always haunted us & wanted to bring in some stability to stop us being the push-over's we were before. He also tried to install an attitude into the club for bigger & better things, that's so, so needed in our stadium.

@@StevetheWeave. He will always be respected & welcomed, how many former managers can say that of any club, he left on a high & yes he instilled a big club mentality which is what we have always been but he made sure the players knew that & il always appreciate he got us our first trophy in over 40yrs & in Europe for 3 seasons running & only just missed out again this season in games we should of won 🇬🇧⚒

@@TheWESTSIDE1967 Yes we are and always have been a big club. There isn't many clubs who can claim to have won a World Cup. It's a shame Moyes couldn't of won more games & must be disappointed, to not have got the best out of some players (ie Phillips) COYI

i remember moore, hurst, peters, redknapp, lampard and bonds with greenwood. i also remember bonds, lampard, brooking, devonshire and martin under lyall. both eras were mixed bag. one day would beat the best team in england then the following week could'nt string a pass together against some 2nd division minnow in the FA CUP. west ham were very unpredictable.
