I used a G29 to reach the top 1% in iRacing but got stuck there. I upgraded to an R5 and improved slightly to 0.9%, but after upgrading to an R12, I went back to 1%. For me, all the hype around high-end gear doesn't make a big difference. If you're not a skilled driver, better equipment won't magically make you one. While force feedback is nice, your driving skill is what truly matters. In my opinion, an R5 is more than enough to feel everything you need. As for pedals, I don't see the point in spending extra money. Pedal feel is just a preference, and they don't replicate a real car's feel since they're not connected to any system that adjusts based on the car. Especially with the clutch, you'd need different settings for each car and a mechanism to feel it properly. Don’t waste money on an expensive pedal system with springs and rubber just to apply more force. You don’t need it. Maybe a spring for the brake makes sense if you want to simulate gentle, easy braking like in a normal car. But in real racing, the force required is much greater, and you can actually feel the brakes. A spring won't replicate that feedback without electronic control. If you're serious about sim racing, buy an R5, and get a clutch, shifter, and a rig for added immersion. Anything beyond that is pure luxury and unnecessary for maximizing your enjoyment. It won't improve your experience beyond a certain point.

TBH about 99% of the people playing what this guy calls 'hardcore sims' don't have brake pedals significantly better than the one in the R5. It's not like every other logitech, thrustmaster and even other entry level DD have load cell is it? At best a few of them have some kind of spring or piece of rubber to add fake resistance. It'd probably be worth getting the mod to add the spring. But the review as "not for hardcore sims' is exaggerated. Note too that plenty of the cars in sims like assetto corsa have ABS anyway (not added as an aid, they're factory fitted in the real car) so that makes it complete moot.

Honestly, i don't understand the bundle decisions made by Moza. The wheel at 28cm is a little too toy-like and the pedals are something you would upgrade sooner than later. If you are in the market for a DD, you are not going to be satisfied with those pedals. And let's face it, the wheel and pedals are more important in creating the immersion than the FFB. I hope they end up selling the R5 separately so people can choose better pedals and wheel to go with it. But I'm guessing this partly exists just to steer people into getting the R9 instead, which I would also do with the current options available.

Is it possible to buy the SRP pedals separately and use them with it? Desperately need an upgrade from my G29 for ACC, but parents aren't wanting to spend over 700 on a wheel

Yes. It's avaliable as standalone pedal set before the R5 has been released

The SRP (full version) are available standalone, the SRP Lites (basic starter pedals) are not yet available standalone

@@dannyleeracing awesome. And they'll work with the R5 right?
@dannyleeracing

@@TheLauraaaaaaaaaa The SRP Standard pedals connect directly via USB rather than routing through the R5 so they will(should) work independently, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't so you should be OK. Haven't tested it with my own eyes, though.

Is this an upgrade on thrustmaster t300?

Yes, but not by a huge amount looking at the T300 specs - I haven't tested a T300, but I would skip it and save your money for an R9 / CSL DD

fits the GS V2 WHEEL on the R5 Base aswell?
@dannyleeracing

Yes, I believe the GS V2 does work with the R5. Check the GS V2 page on Moza's site to verify that, it should list the bases it's compatible with

I wish the wheel was just a bit larger and the clutch pedal should be in the box already and not be an additional item you have to order aswell. Its a cheap part I give them that. Ive already ruled the Fanatec CSL out for me. Too many issues with the quick release and price is too high for what it is since only the Gran Turismo DD Pro is available which is 100€ more than the regular CSL. So its either R5 or R9... This is I mostly do Rally, BeamNG tomfoolery and when I drive in other Sims its always cars that require a proper sized round wheel. So maybe R9 + CS Wheel and Pedals and Shifter would be up to me to sort out.

any other time like with the R9 or csl dd (8nm) id have said power really shouldn't be an issue, the main benefit is speed and response times but at 5.5nm peak... that's not enough to get a true DD experience in my opinion and i get a feeling manufacturers are cashing in on the cheap DD hype, most people who buy this are probably going to love it but not realize they are missing what made a DD blow your mind for all these years. i have a feeling the market is going to start getting flooded with cheap chinese DD bases that dont really offer that DD experience. i know that's gonna piss a lot of people off, in before the 3.5nm simagic alpha tiddly arrives.

I think it still makes sense to make these weaker direct drive wheels. Direct drive is just a straight up better technology for responsiveness in racing wheels. The amount of force feedback isn't everything. Hence the mods people do to logitech wheels to increase force responsiveness at the cost of the amount of force feedback
@jinx20001

@@dogboy0912 yeh i somewhat agree with you, having these low power options is always a good thing... i just think a lot of the spirit of what makes a DD remarkable is missing at such low power... i say this because i actually believe the torque one feels through a DD is lower at the hands than it is with a belt or cog driven wheel base believe it or not... for example i have a logitech g29 and a simucube 2 pro, if i set the simucube 2 pro to 2.2nm (minimum i can set simucube is actually 2.5nm) which is the same as the logitech g29 it is basically completely dead... im not exaggerating when i say i cant feel a thing but with the g29 i can feel it... i think this is because the cogs (and belts in belt wheels|) actually artificially boost the power from the motors. so to cut a long story short, i think DD motors kind of need the power to get the most from them, wheels like the g29, t300 etc can get away with tiny motors because of that perceived boost of power you get from the cogs/belts. At 5.5nm my simucube is pretty dead and weak aswell but i will say im using a pretty heavy and large wheel and the motor of the simucube is ofcourse very large and has different inertia characteristics. i just... dont think 5.5 is enough, you are right to say there are still DD advantages, they will always be more responsive and clean i just dont think you are really getting the DD experience with the R5, the wow factor wont be there.

Your R9 review came with pads to address the issue of sound with the shifters. Did these come with that too? I might have missed that in this review.

will this also work with 'regular' arcade / emulation / console racing games, besides sim racing? I've heard these higher end setups aren't compatible... thx a lot, great info/video on this!

Thanks for watching! If it's not in the confirmed compatibility list, then it *might* work, but will probably be very limited in what it does because such games might not have been designed with advanced force feedback in mind and you won't be getting anywhere near full benefit from it.

I bought the R5 bundle, plus the brake mod, the 12” round wheel, the hgp shifter, handbrake, universal mounting adapter, and the usb hub from Moza’s website. So far I’ve received the 12” wheel, hand brake, and usb hub; the brake mod will be delivered tomorrow. It’s week two of awaiting my shipping info on the r5 wheel base, pedals, shifter, and universal mounting adapter (the most important bits). 🥲
