The tonal exploration of the exposition of the first movement is absolutely astonishing for its time. Also the liberty of the contrapuctical combinations of the slow movement. This is the largest score of chamber music of Mozart frol such a piint of view.

Fabulous recording! I would believe the person who said Grumiaux. Incredibly precise and refined violin playing. A couple of old fashioned slides that give it away as a recording from the 50s or 60s.

The pitch is high, about 446-451. That is why the piece's main key sounds as D-flat major.
@andrewmargrave7518
7 жыл бұрын
I was mistaken in stating that the recording's pitch was in the A=446-451 range. An A=435 tuning fork matches the first A-flat above middle C. Thus the pitch is A-flat=435, which translates to about A=460, about 80% of a semitone above A=440. No wonder people heard the recording sharp. It was, flagrantly.

In addition to the issue of the pitch, there is the matter of the order of the inner movements (a al Mahler's Sixth Symphony). Most editions have it as Menuetto/Andante, where as here it is Andante/Menuetto, which makes more sense to me. I know that Grimiaux offered it in the Andante/Menuetto order on his recording so this could be his recording, although I don't know if he was alone here, or whether the movements were regularly flip-flopped. If anyone knows the situation here, a word of explanation would be appreciated. In any event, this quintet has always appealed to me far more than its reputed companion in G Minor, K, 516, which I find rather uneven in quality. Tragedy for me is no guarantee that a work will be necessarily better than if it were to depict happiness. The writer here refers to the other pair of works in G Minor and C Major; i.e., the 40th and 41st Symphonies. Curiously, my personal reaction here is exactly the opposite; I much prefer the G Minor work. I find myself comparing the Jupiter unfavorably with Beethoven's 1st Symphony all the time. It is not a question of technical mastery, but rather how I respond to the respective works.

Am4d3usM0z4rt Is 480pLQ better than 360pHQ?
@Primelegend2233
10 жыл бұрын
480 is better than 360 but it doesn't matter much because that is for the resolution of the video. Since this is music it doesn't affect the quality. If you use a data connection from your phone or have slower internet, I would select the lower resolution at 360 or even lower for music so that you do not spend more data.

Thanks!! I didn't think that the sound changed much. It didn't occur to me that was a measure of the video quality. Since I have fiber optics cable and a very fast desktop the data while I'm listening is fine, but now I'll know not to waste space on my hard drive if I download a piece that I intend to keep. . Why do so many chamber works sound so damn boring and high brow. No one wants to hear that. Some excitement please. And for God's sake stop placing the violin parts so high. No knock on Mozart, but this piece has me hitting the snooze button. I feel the same way about the flute and oboe. Athough I dig Herbie Mann's stuff. As far as classical works go, unless the flute is incorporated with other instruments for texture, or the oboe is used effectively (ie Tchaikovsky's Hamlet), I find the flute and oboe very weak sounding. I want my chamber works and orchestral pieces to be strong and thought provoking, not feeble and boring. Mozart falls short in this quintet imho.
