A small and very early section comb Swiss Music Box, c 1815 with 68 fine teeth in groups of 2. Here it plays 3 pieces from Mozarts ever popular Magic Flute, the third piece, my favourite ‘the bird catcher’ is especially evocative and really captures the essence of the piece in a way that later and more musically able instruments would perhaps struggle?
The case is not original, but a replacement made mid 20thc after the original, charred and partially smashed had successfully protected the mechanism when the Viennese building in which it sat was bombed during WW2 & rescued by the current owners father.
