Outtakes from Edward R. Murrow's interview of former president Harry S. Truman at the Olney Inn in Islamorada, Florida, between February 8-15, 1957; filmed by Charles Mack and Martin Barnett. Subject matter on this reel includes: Truman's desire to re-join the military; missing his chance to nominate a Vice President at the 1944 DNC; Truman's trouble with General MacArthur and his dismissal; effectiveness of the FBI; the rights of government employees and the House Un-American Activities Committee; Truman's approach to speechwriting and difficult speeches he had to make and the importance of the President's words on a national and international stage; requests for prayers after the death of President Roosevelt; Truman's relationship with John L. Lewis and the coal mining strikes; the practice of walking every morning; Truman's advisers and their loyalty to him; Truman's childhood and family memories growing up; Mr. Truman's reliance on Mrs. Truman's advice throughout his career; his interest in reading and his studiousness in school; memories of World War I service; pleasant conversationalists; the qualities of southerners and border state folks as storytellers; southern non-conformist leaders and the people who follow them; the demagogue from Wisconsin (McCarthy); the qualities of a good political speech and the first speech he ever tried to make in Lee's Summit when he was running for County Judge; the jobs he had out of high school; pleasant times spent in Paris both after WWI and after his presidency; his track record as a County Judge; and learning to play the piano and appreciate music and passing that along to his daughter, Margaret.
This series of interviews between Murrow and Truman constitute the raw material that was edited into the CBS program "From Precinct to President: Some Reflections by Harry S. Truman" which aired on February 2, 1958 and was rebroadcast during CBS funeral coverage when Mr. Truman passed away in December, 1972. They are for viewing and research purposes only.
