The best MPC is always the one you currently own. Such amazing instruments. I've had my One a few months now, and I had the option to by any unit when I did. I went with the One primarily due to layout and form factor. The screen on the One is in perfect position, and the overall size just seems more efficient.

Yea those are the exact reasons I picked up the One. But I’m finding myself wanting to pick up the Live
@Marco-ek8wu

Spot on review. I had the one and then moved on to the MPC Live 2. I miss the workflow of the One everything made sense, the layout was perfect. The live 2 not having a dedicated program edit button is just annoying. The larger pads double trigger more than the one. You’re right about the pad functions being at the top, your arm gets in the way. It’s also a lot of glancing from left to right. The rubber buttons are just well rubbery - prefer the One buttons. Whats with that horrible rubber finish on the live2 as well - it’s a proper dust and finger print magnet. Those plus and minus buttons are just a waste - I never use them. There is a lot of room for dedicated buttons but it’s just wasted. I’ve even asked akai to allow access to the plus and minus buttons so we can assign our own short cuts such as program edit. I also don’t like the menu button and the the main button. Prefer this to be the same layout as the One so you can jump from one machine to another and it’s the same. But that’s where my gripes about the live 2 end. I love the battery - totally liberating. The built in SSD drive (1TB in mine) is awesome, nice and tidy with no extra cables. The speaker is really handy when I’ve had enough of headphones or just want to quietly map and edit the song or play out some drums. Bluetooth is so handy for my iPhone . I can just hook up Bluetooth midi in AUM and play all my softsynths. Wifi is super useful not only for splice but also for ableton link. The usb 3.0 on the back can charge my phone too. I like the extra ins and outs. Also the sd card slot is neat in the back. The headphone jack is a proper sized 6.3mm. Having the screen closer to the right means it’s easier to use without a stand. It can be laid flat. The larger pads are a pleasure. Having a volume knob on the front is better. The size being more horizontal means it sits on my desk better and allows for more ports on the back. My MPC One started to look like an intensive care ward. Cables everywhere, dongles, usb hubs that also need more power, external usb drives, mixing desks etc etc. When you unplug the live 2 and just sit on the couch, no cables , no headphones, only then do you really appreciate how cool this thing is. Problem is it isn’t perfect and it should have been, especially as it was a second attempt following the original live. No program edit button was unforgivable but it could be saved with a software upgrade to allow access to those plus and minus buttons. Workflow wise - I still miss my One. If Akai have any sense then they will be working on a MPC One XL (retro edition from the start to honour the 2000xl) with battery, usb 3.0, Bluetooth and wifi. Volume and record knobs on the front, maybe a slider and a tilted screen. Dedicated arranger button, shift button moved to the left of the pads and disk streaming. V3.0 os. I would then sell my live 2 in a heartbeat. Note: I bought my live 2 second hand for a good price. I wouldn’t have bought it new at full rrp when the MPC One came to market. Budget wise the One wins hands down.

Great job of conveying the differences and your subjective preferences, Malo. I feel like some peeps get too hung up on getting defensive about their specific machine, and wind up missing the trees for the forest, so to speak. Workflow and layout is everything, otherwise, we limit our ability to maximize creative output. Once we land on the tool which begins to merge with us in an organic fashion, everything just flows. I like the layout, the extra buttons, and the form factor of the One more than I like what the Live II brings to the table. I have a battery for the One, with which the One is still lighter than the Live II, and a portable speaker for the few times headphones won't cut it. I found that a larger SD card was just as fast as an internal SSD (if not faster), and the other features of the Live II were either just convenient and not something I needed. YMMV. Here's my opinion. Which ever device you choose I believe you will be happy with. If you are brand new into making music and you want a top of the line (live 2), you will enjoy the speaker. Learning the MPC was super convenient with the speaker. I would take it to my kitchen table, to my couch, and the home studio. If you already have monitors and maybe you like midi keyboard then the One is the way to go!

MPC One owner here. I much prefer a modified MPC One to an MPC Live 2. Like yourself, I love the square layout which just reminds me of the old school early 2000’s MPCs (500, 1000, 2500, 5000), and I much prefer the feel of the hard tactile buttons. I installed the fat pads on mine which makes the smaller pads a non-issue, as well as an old school jog wheel with a thumb-divot that improves workflow. I’m also perfectly fine with using an SD Card. The game changer though was attaching a laptop power bank. I attached it to the top-back, right under the I/O section. Used some industrial strength clear velcro and some rubber furniture pegs under it and it pretty much acts like a mini stand while powering the MPC one for 8+ hours. Got a small 1 inch cable to use and it’s like the thing isn’t even there. Only thing that’s missing in comparison to the Live 2 is the built in speaker but I always use head phones anyway and you can always use a portable aux speaker. For $400-500 less and with a better workflow/layout/design I’d definitely take the MPC One + mods any day.

I work in the electronics industry, and can understand Akai's approach. Removal of the battery/WiFi/Bluetooth to reduce costs makes sense - it's supposed to be an entry machine (and maybe a gateway drug to the X ;-) )
@davidtenser2660
2 жыл бұрын
@@mungewell I think that misses the philosophical differences between the two devices. The One is small and portable, it should have a battery. The X is something meant for the studio environment. That said, I think Akai's idea is that the One is a hub for a more stationary setup for enthusiasts that don't have a ton of space, the fact that it has CV outputs suggests it's designed for this audience in mind. It's only a bit ironic that the one MPC that IS portable is fitted with lots more outputs and is generally larger and heavier. The product line doesn't entirely make sense no matter how you look at it. With all that said, I do love my MPC One.

I went for the One over the Live 2 after seeing that you can power them with a rechargeable powerbank & just velcro it underneath. Plastic foldaway stand and it all fits into the Hard case with some earbuds. It's smaller and weighs much less than the Live 2, which is very oddly priced imho... I ended up buying an X recently for £900. Having everything digitally labelled & in it's own space, with all of those ins and outs & a 10" screen is easily worth the extra £25 (???) :P The 1TB Sata Drive for it was less than £40. Ended up with a 1.6TB Monster for under a grand with a 512GB SD Card. I have serious back problems so I use the One in my bed on a stand & the X stays on the sofa because she's an X. They're HUGE & can't fit in my bed. ;) It's like living life backwards. First I found The One. Then I saw the X and couldn't resist! I like big buttons an´ I can not lie. :P

@@malobeats ... I understand your perspective. 👍 In the UK right now, MPC One is priced at $ 730. MPC Live II is at $ 1125. I can sacrifice portability. Plus having learnt that I can use a power bank instead of plugged into wall and that its possible to expand outputs by using a sound card ? 🤔 Am new to all this , just know i don't want to use a computer and DAWS completely or most of the time. Before researching this unit, I was looking at the Beringer RD 9 and the Behringer TD 3 MO. Are you familiar with either of them ? Could the MPC One be used with the RD 9 ? and the TD 3 MO ? I need to do more research plus watch some more of your uploads ! 👍✊🙏

I really love my ONE, own mine for 18 month now. And i´m really shure, if you ever get used to the extra buttons on the ONE, you don´t wanna go back back from that. BUT i really want a X for more control options (16 Qlinks!), but otherwise desire the LIVE 2 for battery and speaker. So i keep my ONE, until i can afford a X and a LIVE 2.

@@malobeats That 16 QLinks on the X with the lighted displays is just crazy in my eyes. You mostly can use every synth or fx on the MPC like it is hardware. For example, HYPE only makes fun if you turn the knobs, so it is much more fun to have 16 parameters in the first lane than just 4. And if you customized it to your needs, i can not imagine how much fun this is. Bonus the larger screen.

I have a One and X. The biggest things for me going to the X were the Q links, less sausage finger moves with the screen, the expanded I/O, more direct buttons less shortcuts, better feeling jog wheel. The X workflow is alot quicker...you don't have to think as much. I was comfortable with the layout coming from the One in about a half hour. I got mine as B-stock from Reverb...It was brand new the film was still on it no scratches no smudges...saved about 1,000 on it instead of paying full MSRP.

Otherwise, there's a great moment in the video. When you are outside with your kid, and you raise your MPC so your daughter can go down and walk, and in the same time, you keep playing the rythm on pad, that shows the perfect mix between good dad and good beatmaker. ;^) Take care of you and your family.

Hey David, that’s a great question and thank you for taking the time to ask. If I could only choose one MPC I would stick with the MPCLIVE sins I’m able to be mobile with it and it also offers extra flexibility when it comes down to it expanding your workflow in the future. I told myself I was going to sell the MPC one but I notice there’s a lot of people that still love it when I post MPCONE videos and I specifically kept it just for my KZitem channel but if you were not for the KZitem channel I would just stick with the MPC live.

But with 2.11, connectivity is not a real plus, because with the fact you can handle 32 input and outputs, connectivity is less important. And layout is a real difference. Im doing a singer songwriter indie thing (shins style). Just me and my partner. Basically triggering loops, samples, ambient one shot, pretty much my band in a box, while I sing and play guitar. Is this the box we need or overkill? Or would a Novation midi controller do the job? Or is the MPC the best because its stand alone no PC required? Again Im singer songwriter, and my partner is my band in the box the whole band, the backing track to the song we write. Im not sure we need all the features, but I dont know man, I play all the instruments in my studio. But I dont know anything about electronic music or these samplers. What do you recommend for backing up a singer songwriter situation? Using loops samples and stuff.

Honesty I feel the mPC one is the way to go.
