Very well explained! Ive been using the MPC for well over a decade now and still learned more than I knew about Swing! TY

Thanks for your in-depth explanations with examples! I’ve used swing but just experimented with it until I got the sound I was looking for. Now I understand it only moves the event notes. This video was very useful. I’m looking forward to more!

SP-16 I just roll the dial and whatever swing percentage it lands on is what I use. DAW swing to taste, then bring down the swing strength to roughly 75% for a semi quantised but still human feel

This is good, but what if we record without quantise to then apply a 16th % swing? I guess it sort of adjust to be more on the grid as mentioned by you. Sometimes it can be tricky to understand. As another important thing is that if a midi channel or group has a % of swing setted, once you delete and re record in some cases the recording comes out wrong because of this previous settings. Once i was recording some midi, and they were not good, and that was because it got into the swing and delay setting that was done earlier.

This little details can do a lot into the production process, and in Ableton i find it more difficult to set those up, and can get pretty confusing

I think you’re right about that, if you delete what you’ve recorded on a track and re-record, the swing settings are still there, they are not deleted. Something to be aware of!

Nice video! I’d be curious to see if the Groove Pool swing settings for MPC within Ableton are the same as an actual machine. I’m guessing it would be. Would be interesting to do this with the other machine based swing grooves in Ableton and compare them to the time/beat grid like you did.

I’m sorry but classic boom bap, which is why we’re even talking about MPC swing in the first place, is what’s needed. Everything that quantizes midi does what you showed. Thats just swing not MPC swing.
