EDIT: Alright, looks like this got a decent amount of upvotes, here's the Patreon page if you wanna' help support this mission! - www.patreon.com/mrbillstunes If you liked the editing & format of this video & you would like to see me put content out more frequently, Gardner has offered to edit my raw footage for a fee, so I was toying with the idea of starting a Patreon account to cover these fees & if we can hit ~$50 a week, I can fwd that onto Gardner & put a new tutorial out every week. If this is an idea you're interested in, let me know in the comments & I'll try my best to implement the neccasary steps to make this happen :) I'd love to put out more content here, I just honestly don't have the time or patience to do so, but I believe this would be a viable option that would allow this.

Super helpful tutorial, MB! FYI Contrast is cranked a bit too high on the vid (blacks are crushing detail) - looks like some default LUT is being applied for color and not dialed back using a color spectrum analyzer, a situation which weirdly parallels the audio lesson of the tutorial itself. Particularly important when dealing with YT vid compression (which itself parallels SoundCloud’s audio compression artifacts w 16-bit WAV/320 MP3)

You the man Mr. Bill. Thanks for all the help! I've been watching "The Art of Mr.Bill" for a while now. Currently on season 2 episode 6, and at this point my entire outlook and attitude towards producing tunes has shifted in an extremely positive way. Having much more fun again too with all the new tips and tricks I've picked up from ya. These lessons are much appreciated : )

I have been doing this for a while now, except I find fullscreen mode with PROQ2 is much nicer to look at and reference from. It has some good parameters to choose from, including the slope of the spectrum which is very handy (4.5dB slope seems to be the flattest setting, and flicking between that and the 0dB slope is a good shout) Then when referencing your mix with a professionally mastered track, you just have to match the RMS level and you're set. You can easily A/B and check how much energy you are pumping into each freq band. \m/

I actually did this already until I got a sub. I'll be honest, using a sub will almost always give you much better results but if you dint, I can confirm this helps. I would suggest using a LUFS meter on just the sub part of you are mixing in headphones. I use 3 headphones when mastering. They're all connected in parallel and gain matched. I use a powered splitter and I have gotten really good results.

Yooo, thx for this Mr. Bill. But when you say 'turn your sub up', do you mean turn the bottom layer of the bass/808 part up, or just grab an eq on the mastering channel and boost 40-80hz?

Short recap: 1. Add spectrum plugin(From [Audio Effects] -> [Utilities] -> Spectrum) 2. Press left bottom button [Auto] to -> [Range] 3. Set the appeared left number value to 1 (This is maximum loudness value to display) 4. Set the right value to 8-9 (adjust to your loudness) 5. Monitor through the track if you have your subs equal during the track 6. Ideally it should hit ~around -2 Db to sound fat (but remember it's a very relative value)

Thanks for sharing this man! Recently was watching KJ Sawka who showed this trick as well. I suppose it would change for each track - he mentioned keeping it at least -6db for Subs. Any feedback on that? Genre is dnb
@SimonShackletonMusic
2 жыл бұрын
Compare and contrast with other well-produced tracks in that genre and see what they're doing with their subs - it's always a trade off really - you have a finite amount of headroom to work with, so getting the balance of LOUD with suitably bassy is always going to be a bit of a wrestling match.

That sub seems incredibly high in volume. I make a lot of dubstep and the guys I reference are usually hitting -6 to -4 at best. And their RMS are crazy loud. Your RMS must be super crazy high can you explain why your sub is at such a high level please?
@MrBillsTunes
6 жыл бұрын
They don't call it "bass music" for nothin' ;) I feel like dubstep usually aims for a compromise between bass & overall perceived volume (hence all the screechy tones sitting around 2-4khz & such, they sound super agressive & sit right in that vocal range we've been so used to hearing for millions of years), where as this stuff is supposed to just sorta be big & bloated I feel.
@kn00tcn

just because one area is loud doesnt mean the RMS or LUFS will be loud

The beauty of this trick is by just using stock plugins. But wouldn’t you think EQ-matching as part of Fabfilter EQ is even more convenient?

Producers please note: listening to a tracks sub range in solo may not be an ideal metering solution for referencing, but it's not something you should outright avoid in your mixing process. Frequency scanning is a helpful way to look for possible conflictions in the various bands. Also you can export/resample a track through a low pass to quickly visually look for any unwanted peaks in the low end, as well as get a look at the balance between your kick and sub.

Hey Bill, Not on the topic of this video nessecarily but could you do a video on how you manage gain staging at this point in your production and also, when you reference your tune unmastered v a mastered tune, are you emulating some kind of mastering with the Limiter? For example, you write your tunes and you have your kick at 0vu, then mix around that, then push the limiter on the master so it's at the same volume as a mastered tune? So that way you can A/B vs it with more accuracy?

When I adjust my sub level to a reference tracks sub level, the sub bass sounds WAY overbearing and almost distorted. Idk why that is, but at first it showed my sub bass was at least -8db quieter than the reference track. Yet hitting around the same LUFS?... y
