This is my favorite Mr. Show skit. In the commentary for this episode on DVD, Bob Odenkirk said he got the idea from watching a documentary on TV about Al Jolson. He said that the people being interviewed who had worked with Jolson thought he was talented, but they hated him. "I was his assistant for 30 years. He was a cruel man. He was cruel to me, but boy could he dance. Then they cut to Jolson, dancing like shit."

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE NOT THINK THIS STUFF IS FUNNY? My GF looks at this stuff and gets pissed off that I'm even showing it to her. ARGH. Hey, maybe you guys would like to watch my KZitem show on my channel? It has a similar polar effect that Mr. Show has. Btw, in high school, I named my band "Mr. Combo." That was before I had seen Mr. Show. We think the same way, I guess. 10 years later there was still a band named Mr. Combo at that high school, too. Weird. It wasn't even mine.

This has been my favorite Mr. Show sketch since I first saw it on HBO when it was new. I've seen it many times on the dvd's and on this youtube clip, but only just now I notices that they are singing about the vacuum cleaner and carpet sweeper they're using at the end. It's nice that this sketch is so genius there's still new stuff to find after all these years.

To the person downthread who wondered why they used megaphones in this sketch: Microphones as we know them today weren't good enough to use widely until the mid-1920s. Before then, performers' voices had to carry, and there were times when some pop singers really did have to use megaphones on stage in a big music hall.
