I grew up in Rochester NY... just an hour east of Buffalo and not only do I remember Mr. Wonderfull cereal,...I LOVED it!!!! I can still taste it in my memory. The best way I can describe it was like taking a KIX cereal puff (sphere) and filling it 3/4 of the way with sweet vanilla bark. (For the vanilla variety of course). When you would take a spoonful of these sensational spheres....you would get the crunchiness of the corn and rice balls with the "wonderfull" smoothness of a vanilla candy bar. Honestly,...it was amazing!!! That being said,...I DO remember after a while though something began to change. The flavor was still great but the corn/rice balls had less and less vanilla filling. Many were blanks and I can assure you...the sensation of just eating KIX cereal was not great for an 8 year old. I think by the end of the year...my mom couldn't find it anymore in our Wegmans stores. It really was a fantastic cereal and assumed the chocolate was good too. I have it ranked high on my Top 10 favorite cereals of all time : 1. Kaboom (when it was made with Oat flour and not the crappy Corn it changed to) Even the marshmallows had a unique flavor back then. I ate this every weekend for years!!! 2. Sir Grapefellow. It was awesome...and the grape flavor was fantastic! And c'mon...who doesnt want grape milk!!! 3. Mr. Wonderfull Vanilla 4. Pink Panther Flakes 5. Fruity Pebbles 6. Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries 7. Apple Jacks 8. Cinnamon LaFoote 9.Frosted Rice Chex 10.Frosted Rice Krispies.

I'm older. This cereal came out right in the sweet spot, so to speak, of my cereal-eating years. I turned 8 years old the year it came out, evidently. And I can honestly say that I never heard of it. Thanks for the info.

I have been trying to find evidence of this cereal for 50 years! I was six when it came out and it was amazing. So amazing that I remember it a half century later. Crispy on the outside, creamy sugary goodness on the inside. I grew up in Buffalo NY and was thrilled to see it made its debut there. I also remember the super ruler prize, and from the descriptions below, have a vague memory of the ad. I can see why it was discontinued, but man, was it good!

The best part is that Mr Wonderfull convinces those kids to NOT exercise. That GM PR guy was right out of the tobacco company tradition.

Very nice detective work in this video, Gabe. I think this cereal would've been good if it stuck around longer. That Mr Wonderfull mascot looks like a rejected "The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show" character.

My memory was a little cloudy about the name and character, and I barely remember the commercial for this cereal but I definitely remember the cereal itself! I loved it, even though it really was like eating candy, but it didn't seem anymore sweeter than Cap'n Crunch or Count Chocula.

In 1972 I turned 11 years old and lived in West Seneca, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. I remember this cereal -- we had both varieties and I liked it a lot. I have friends who remember it fondly as well. There were TV commercials -- maybe only one. All I remember about it is the mascot shouting "surprise" in a high annoying voice. I also remember hearing about the controversy about sugary cereals. In subsequent years we noticed cereal names being changed, e.g. Sugar Smacks > Honey Smacks > Smacks. We kids knew it was just a name game. Mad Magazine (and the mostly unchanged taste of the cereals) tipped us off. If memory serves, Mr. Wonderfull cereal pieces were not spherical, but more squarish puffs, almost like little crunchy pillows.

I am nearing 52 and was raised in Rochester NY. Mr. Wonderfulls Surprize is my all time favorite cereal. I remember asking to get this cereal time and time again. I also remember being very disappointed when it was no longer on the shelf, and half heartedly searched for it weekly for months. I still have a few of the premiums with the puzzle card being one of them. I also have a Mr. Wonderfulls Surprize bread truck (matchbox sized) and one of my most cherished childhood items a green plastic oval clamshell case...with Mr. Wonderfulls face raised on either side. (half dollar sized..ish) The chocolate was my favorite, the filling would turn almost a pudding when submerged in milk. AHHHHHH the good ole days.

My family used to visit relatives in Kenmore, Buffalo, from the 60s to the 90s and being from Queens, my younger bro and I would gleefully find cereal and candy there that we couldn't get back home. This is one of them, encountering it back in the early-mid 70s. We recently were racking our brains trying to remember the name of this cereal, we remembered the product only, and last night we hit it, thanks to this channel. Buffalo was part of a midwest product testing demographic, where new food items came to live or die, hence the total obscurity of Mr. Wondefull's Surprize. We got a box of the chocolate flavor at the local 'venient(convenience store for those not clued in to the lingo there) and gave it a go. We were amused by the fact that the filling weighted the puff inside only in one half, so when you poured the milk in, the whole bowl of puffs would flip over as if animated. Now, we grew up with a respectable amount of sugared cereals in the 60s. But this was like nothing else we EVER encountered, I don't know if we even made it through the box. It was so left field and obscenely sweet, we started to feel somewhat put off by this bizaare specimen of breakfast cereal. I know some others in the comments have favorable memories but, wow, this was just too over the top. We didn't get any more after that. I suppose if we had any foresight we should have kept the box, but hey, we were just kids and who knew?..Cereal collecting just wasn't a thing then..still, it provided a very amusing memory, among others..

With other cereals like Cocoa Krispies, Super Sugar Crisp, etc. We never thought any of these were healthy. P.S. Perhaps it was regional, I grew up in Chandler, Az.

Also. The chocolate was my favorite and the vanilla a close second. It’s true that its outer texture and shape was like Kix and the inner filling was somewhat like a softer center inside an M&M candy. Somewhere between the texture of M&M type of chocolate and dried frosting. The quality did drop. The filling became less and then too many hollow pieces. Could be General Mills got tired of the complaining and just filled orders for the Buffalo/Rochester market until they met order obligations and abandoned it due to the complaints of consumer groups that never tried it anyway. I have had other cereals that were way too sweet like Frosted Flakes, Super Sugar Crisp, and Frosted Crispies. Mr. Wonderfull Surprize tasted better than those and wasn’t as sweet.

This was great cereal. I think that the point made about sugar being listed first instead of the two blends of corn and rice grain not being listed first probably got it blocked by the consumer groups. Sad because it was good. Me and my brothers/sisters ate it all the time and we were bummed when General Mills took it off the market. Eventually it disappeared from B-Kwik, Tops, Bells/A&P markets. There is anGeneral Mills plant in Buffalo so it must have been made there. When you drive by the plant you can smell what’s being made. My favorite smell is when they make Cocoa Puffs!

It was fantastic....but actually it was sweet and so flavorful but not overly sweet. It was perfectly balanced between the corn/rice neutral flavor (like a plain Ice cream cone) with the richness of a tiny morsel of vanilla bark...the texture of a chocolate chip but Vanilla flavored.

I like how back then companies used to claim a sugary cereal was part of a balanced breakfast not because of the cereal itself, but because of the accompaniments. It’s not unlike when fast food companies marketed a greasy cheeseburger meal and then pictured it with a Diet Coke.

I wish they had put a photo of the actual cereal on the box. It's crazy how GM tried to market a cereal like that as healthy, but then I guess the way Kellogg's has marketed Frosted Flakes isn't any better.

I'm 56 and do not remember this cereal at all which is too bad because I might have liked it. I remember in the 70s every cereal was touting their "health" benefits trying to sound good for you. Every commercial was "part of this complete breakfast!" I'm pretty sure the attack was on at this point on sugary cereals. We ate cereal almost every morning for breakfast.

I do vaguely remember this, which would have been a year before I went into first grade. I don't think it had enough of a standout factor. I'd say "Surprize" is some sort of portmanteau of surprise and prize, and it seems like every box would come with a prize of some sort. Kinda like how his name is Mr. Wonder"full," because each piece is full of flavored goo. Very belabored, if you ask me. And it's funny that a cereal in that era would actually get complaints from parental groups considering that was the golden era of ultra sugary, candy like cereals. Probably the Action for Children's Television crowd that started up around that time. Wait. Is that a periscope on his hat? To me, it looks like his gag was hiding around corners until the right moment to yell "Surprize." Between that and the forced puns in the brand's name, I'd say the mascot would have killed just as much business as the A.C.T. busybodies.
