Genuine U.S military MRE from 2012 If you'd like to contribute a little towards producing these videos, thanks in advance. Our Patreon link is below: / kiwidudemre
Son, this is more properly called "biscuits and gravy" - a fine breakfast meal - if done right. It is common to the southeast United States, and west all the way to Texas and beyond. Sadly, it wasn't done right and I'll have to try it. Proper biscuits and gravy are made with good pork sausage (Jimmy Dean "hot") with a white gravy made with sausage fat, juices and flour. This is properly served over a fine biscuit. Anyway, you got your hands on a proper U.S. breakfast: biscuits and gravy and granola. Sorry for the confusion, this is a regional dish in the US. Cheers, and God Bless. Daniel Taylor, Colorado, US

the pork sausage with cream gravy is a typical southern US breakfast, all you need with it is southern US biscuits and you got it. the only thing that would make it better is instant grits with country ham and red eyed gravy.

Kiwi Dude give them a A for effort, but maybe a D for results. you can make southern US southern biscuits out of all purpose flour, Crisco shortening, buttermilk.(3 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of shortening, 2 cups of buttermilk, nead together till you get close to the considency of bread dough, dust the top with flour, use something about the size of a milk can to cut them out, bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, melt butter on top to soften them up) use a rue (not kangaroo) butter and flour mixed fry sausage patties in a pan, pour cream into the frying pan on low heat, add the rue to thicken, crumble the sausage into the mix, halve the biscuits pour over and enjoy. hope this helps.

@killkarl8198

+Kiwi Dude also you can make the gravy yourself with ease. Next time you fry up some sausage patties take the sausage out of the pan, but leave the grease and the little bits that break loose from the patties, let it get to a medium heat. Then take all purpose flour and mix it in with the grease. Use equal parts of flour and grease. Stir rapidly and constantly. As the mixture thickens into a paste, let it brown but do not burn it.(this takes a little practice) once the paste is uniform in texture and fairly brown, add whole milk in small parts and stir well. This will usually make enough to fill up the skillet with gravy. Make sure the entire mixture comes to a boil or it won't thicken up like gravy. Then break the sausage patties up and mix them back in. Pour over your biscuits that the other guy told you how to make. Makes a really nice biscuits n gravy meal for a family. I am from Alabama in the states, so this is a staple I grew up on and continue to cook for my family now.

I had one of these, that I brought from a surplus store. I will try mine since watching your great review. I went into the army in the 70's and ate c rations, I left just as mre were coming on line. The sausage gravy the reason its white is because the gravy base is flour and milk. The first mre's were to say the least horrible. At least to me, since I was used to c rat's. I carried tabasco sauce, a-1 steak sauce and ketchup in my truck. They either give rations taste or cover it up. Also you never ate your food right away, there was 5-10 min of trading with other people to get what you wanted and to give away the crap you didn't. I would hate to see what a North Korean ration looks like, probably paper and grass.

The main course of that MRE definitely has a Southern twist. Biscuits and Redeye Gravy (white gravy with sausage) is a staple breakfast in the southern United States. I grew up eating dishes like that almost every day. One big reason it's so popular is that it's pretty inexpensive to make. Fresh buttermilk biscuits, gravy made with the drippings from cooking the bulk pork sausage, a little salt and pepper to taste, maybe a side of hominy grits and you've got a hearty breakfast!
@KiwiDudeMRE

it is made with breakfast sausage not with a dinner type sausage. Typically the crumbles are sauteed and then a rich homemade cream gravy is made in the same pan with the sausage and quite a bit of black pepper is added. This looks like it should, with gloppy gravy that is far too thick, but I bet it doesn't taste like it should :-)

It sounds like this video is the first time you have ever had sausage gravy. If that is the case, and the MRE was your first experience, I am so sorry. Sausage gravy is a Southern and Midwestern United States favorite. It is very easy to make, and I hope you give it another try. Brown your sausage. After it is cooked through, put enough flour in the pan and stir until all the sausage is coated with flour. Add enough whole milk to just start to cover the sausage. Simmer and then serve over buttered biscuits. I never add salt to mine or hot sauce. I let others season it.

cplaussem Nope, it's not ever called red eye gravy, Sometimes it's called left hand gravy as there's an old wives tale that if you don't stir it with the left hand it won't thicken. Red eye gravy however, you fry a slice of Salt cured ham, the old fashioned kind that you hang from the ceiling dried in a salt box in a smokehouse, then add a cup of strong coffee to the drippings sometimes with a touch of flour and simmer till it thickens.

Bbuny31 Actually it's a classic Breakfast of the Southern states but many Northern states have taken it onboard as well. When I go to Vegas, Biscuits and Gravy are staples in nearly every Restaurant, Café and Buffet all over Vegas. In the Casino I last stayed at (The Gold Coast) they not only had Biscuits and Gravy, they had biscuits and 3 different types of Gravy - Normal Sausage gravy, Beef Gravy (still the same white gravy, but with Beef rather than Sausage) and Red Eye. I never ever did find out what the hell Red Eye gravy was all about. But in the US biscuits are not biscuits as much of the world knows them, but are rather sconey type things. The gravy also isn't Bisto or Oxo, it's a white Sauce that is more closely related to Béchamel Sauce rather than Gravy as you would get in the UK.

Kiwi Dude we have what we call here "Biscuits and Sausage Gravy". If you would like a recipe to make some, let me know. We also eat something we call "Scrapple" which is made by mixing Pork Sausage or Pork Parts to Cornmeal, making it into a loaf, then sticking it in the Fridge overnight, then slicing it frying it in a skillet, then pouring "Maple" Syrup over it. They should have added some bread to the MRE to pour the Sausage Gravy on.

The beverages literally are pretty random. They're whatever they have gotten in at the time. They contract a few companies and those are all commercial products. They have things from crystal light, to country time lemonade, to kool aid singles, and used to even have tang. So it's whoever is supplying at the time for the beverage bases. Also this meal is the sausage and gravy that you find for breakfast in the US especialyl int eh south. It's usually served over biscuits. Usually pretty peppery. It's a crime you didn't have pepper in your mre. I think that MRE should usually have wheat snack bread over to pour that over.

Usually the sausage gravy has a large amount of black pepper in it. I can't imagine trying to eat it without biscuits or at least some kind of bread for the gravy to go on

the gravy always needs salt and pepper unless it specifically says Southern style, which has a lot of pepper to it. two warm buttermilk biscuits with melted butter inside with this and Bob's your uncle! this gravy minus the sausage is also made about half the time for chicken fried steak. different restaurants, different choices.

+Kiwi Dude do you remember Epicenter Brian's review of the URG sausage gravy(without potatoes)? he made mention of MRE biscuits from Bridgford during it. I wonder if those might have been made available during FTXs? that was about the only way we were able to get the original bread loaf back in the day. I'm not sure they are even available still.....

Jack Poscy I'd recommend checking out eBay, or your local online auction sites. If purchasing from the U.S. it always works out more economical to grab a case of 12 instead of a single.

Kiwi Dude Ok, so I finally tried the Pork Sausage with Gravy. However, mine was from 2011. I saw your video and thought: this is going to be nasty. Luckily, my experience was quite the opposite. Let's just get to the important part. The entree was not as bad as I had expected. Maybe it's because I like white gravy and sausage although it is more a Southern US thing therefore not common for me (side note: I live in the Greater New York area, in NJ). On the downside, it's definitely light on the sausage serving, but I didn't mind it. First time trying that "Wheat Snack Bread," and I'm not a fan so far haha. Though the Cheese and Jalapeño spread is a-ok! Biggest bummer for me was some kind of manufacturing/packaging error: stale/damaged coffee packet. Love my coffee. All in all it was ok, but I can imagine people finding this objectionable to say the least. Mind you I just got done hiking a few miles, so this was pretty damn good.

lawgiver1 I've only had a few 'multi-meal rations' and they are typically made for different tasks. The U.S. 24hr First Strike Ration is designed to be light and eaten on the run, whereas something like the French 24hr RCIR requires a bit of preparation but rewards you immensely with the taste. At this point in time, I'd have to say the French RCIR takes the cake for content, taste, price etc... and they're pretty easy to get your hands on via eBay too.

Hey Kiwi Dude! What do the Aussie's and New Zealand Military eat? I remember watching some old movies about the 2nd World War and how the French got better food than the other Military groups. Like the French Group would get Wine to drink and better food. Where as the Americans and other groups didn't do so well.
