Yeah he’s all of those things, but with that father he has he definitely needs an older sister. Somebody who loves him but isn’t intimidated by his intellect but instead encourages him to make the most of it for the common good. Jed’s intelligence is probably genetic coupled with a natural curiosity and as Leo said “he likes smart people who disagree with him” so he likes being challenged. Most importantly he willing to charge his mind when he learns to evidence for hears a new argument he hadn’t so far considered. Mrs Lanningham saw all this and gave all the encouragement he was lacking from his father. More than encouragement, she gave him high standards for logic, fairness and bravery. Anyone can be born above average intelligence/memory retention/ natural curiosity about how and why the world works how it does. From the orbital of the celestial bodies to the biological mechanics of a simple cell, some peoples want to learn as much as possible. Like Jed. That neurological starvation that makes you want to understand every detail of the subjects you’re interested in isn’t enough. You also need motivation, encouragement and standards set on you by somebody who cares for you and wants to help you fulfil the true potential they know you have. Not unlike unlike a nicer softer version of a drill sergeant. Behind every great man is a great woman and Mrs Landingham the great woman behind Josiah Bartlett. The world is full of highly intelligent failures, She made sure he wasn’t one.

"You're a boy king. You're a foot smarter than the smartest kids in the class. You're blessed with inspiration. You must know this by now. You must have sensed it". This is the essence of the character of Jed Bartlett and it might be my favourite quote from the show. This scene makes me happy every time I watch it.
@unkannyunkanny9232
4 жыл бұрын
But it is also why Jed's father hates him so. When I was a child, I had always heard parents wish their children the best, to be better than themselves, go further, see more, be more. Jed has all that but not a father that loves him. That is his father's victory, even though it diminishes the father being so spiteful. Not all parents are happy that their children will outshine them. Jed really really needed a big sister. She has from the start an upfront self-interest but where she'll walk away from him is not him refusing to agree with her but if he knows what is right and refuses to do it. This turns out to be something his father has tried to instill - out of fear, refuse to act. If Jed had never met her, he might not only not been President, he might never have become Governor. He might have ended up a bitter schoolmaster.

Yep she is always quick to tell Jed when he was wrong but never in a rude or overbearing way. She spoke to him the way she does and he allowed her to speak to him the way she does because they have unlimited respect for one another. Ok this is almost certainly inappropriate but if any of my teachers had been as smart and as pretty as the younger Mrs Landingham I'd have (a) had a crush the size of Texas on her and (b) done anything it took to avoid disappointing her. What I can't quite wrap my head around is how she managed to read the young Bartlett so early and so completely. She woke him up to possibilities he'd probably never have seen otherwise. While I am of course aware this is fiction Mrs Landingham was one of my very favourite women on TV from the very beginning of the West Wing and I was devastated when they killed her off. When this episode aired I was absolutely delighted to see her back even if it was simply as a 'ghost' in the President's office. "Give me numbers." Mrs Landingham, you were and always would be the number one reason why America got Jed Bartlett as president. What a shame neither of you are real. God I miss this awesome show even though I own the entire series on blu-ray now. The sense of anticipation I had every week waiting to see "what's next" is something I haven't felt about a TV show for a very long time.
