in this special case, Ballmer was actually not so wrong. Steve Jobs said in 2010, that laptops will be like trucks, and a "new kind" of "PC" (he clearly was thinking of the iPad) would replace laptops in the near future. Although most of Steve Jobs' predictions during his life were correct, this prediction was totally wrong. Today in 2020 nobody is using the iPad for work, everybody still uses the laptop for work (or at least 95%). And although Windows still isn't cool, it's still the number one Operating System in the world for laptops. But maybe Steve Jobs would have been right if he still were alive, maybe he would have changed the entire world (again) so that his prediction would have been correct.

What could he really say in front of the reporters? Oh iPad is such a cool idea and we should just sort of copy it with the Surface? Or you know there was a windows based tablet called Tablet PC that totally flopped before iPad? Even the iPad sales felt short of expectations after initial hype. What he or Microsoft really didn’t do well was catching the rise of (smarter) handheld devices, whether it be Zune, Nokia, or arguably Surface.

+chettee i think what he says in this video is the single greatest thing i've ever heard him say. I personally agree with him 100%. A tablet in its current state will never overtake the PC in regards of versatility in usage. It's funny because Steve Ballmer says that PC's will evolve in form factor while Steve Jobs said that time will fix any shortcomings of the tablet so that the tablet will eventually, with time, overtake the pc. Following Ballmer's philosophy, i believe that form factor shift is moving towards a form factor that's like a tablet or a hybrid tablet. In Jobs philosophy, i believe a tablets OS will evolve to be more of a hybrid OS to allow more versatility and ease of use for the end user, ultimately ending up closer to a PC OS than it is right now. So essentially BOTH Steve Ballmer and Steve Jobs have different philosophies to the same end result.

Tablets are just clunkier versions of smartphones that help old people do the same thing that young people do on their phones. How many companies do you see working on iPads vs. working on a Windows 10 PC? Abd as for the iPhone, that wouldn't have existed if Steve Jobs couldn't have stood on the shoulders of Microsoft. Sure, Steve innovated it to perfection, but internet-and phone-capable PocketPCs existed for years before the iPhone. Google the device that I had, a Dell Axim x51v, even had a KZitem App with Windows CE. But since no one was ready for it (especially not phone carriers), who could blame Microsoft for thinking the iPhone would suffer the same fate.

Ballmer was (is? for now) a maintainer. Not a visionary. He was made CEO of Microsoft during a time where they were already a market force and monopolised those markets they were in. He was put there to keep them making sack loads of money on their already existing and entrenched products, and to his credit, that's exactly what he's done. The problem is, those areas that Microsoft did (and still do) dominate in are a very different environment to what they were back then. The "PC" market is shrinking, and more and more people are bringing their own devices to work, and these by and large as NOT Microsoft products. They're iPads and iPhones and Android tablets and phones. They have to integrate these things into their workflow. The boss gets a new iPad, IT has to make sure it works with their network. People aren't choosing Microsoft any more. They're quickly becoming the next IBM, which is fantastic for Microsoft, IBM are still a massively influential and profitable company who do a great number of amazing infrastructure based things, but they're not "exciting" to consumers, most consumers will know the name but have no idea what they do other than "it's boring". Microsoft need a visionary in charge, Ballmer isn't that visionary. He served his purpose but the world has changed and so their leadership must if they wish too remain relevant in the consumer space.

Mr. Ballmer, the meeting didn't go very fast? I guess it would go faster using a Windows computer that's always freezing due to "unknown" errors and problems with the registry and bad drivers. Lets not even get started with the many THOUSANDS of viruses and malware, rootkits, Trojans, spy-bots, key-loggers, etc that Windows suffers.

Well, it's 2020 and iPad pro with the magic keyboard is going strong! MKBHD including few other people have already said that iPad Pro is a good enough PC for 90% people. I strongly believe, with time and faster/powerful processors, iPads/Tablets will take over laptops.

they've had 10 years. people dont enjoy the form factor. sure the iPad pro is good enough, but that doesn't matter price does. and company are continuing to use pc's over iPads. go into any call center what are they using pc's. go into any financial office and what are they using pc's

people nowadays preferred portable device because most of the things that normal or average user can do in their laptop or computers are can also be done on their Smartphone or Tablet. Without extra weight and more battery time that they can use it anytime anywhere. and soon as the technology, software and application world evolves and innovate anything that we can do on a PC can also be done on a portable device. Sorry for my English :)

Microsoft thought their surface device would replace tablets. It didn’t. And he’s wrong about usage. A lot of people do most of their computing and web surfing on phones and tablets. By attempting to use one operating system for all of them. They failed everything except PCs which primary really exist for school and work for a lot of people.

I can't understand why you people keep talking about chromebooks.. they are the most fu&king useless things to hit the market.. why on gods green earth would you want a laptop that has 1/100th of the actual functionality of a laptop.. for only like 100 more you can get a full PC that works with all your devices, printers, uses ANY software not just the ones provided by google.. and it works OFFLINE.. Chromebook is the biggest joke to hit the internet..

He's a dinosaur in a digital age. But on top of that their software sucks, I moved over to Mac / Linux a long time ago and my life instantly became more productive. Not saying my adopted platforms are perfect, but its embarrassing the gap in quality and stability between them in my opinion. Maybe a fall from grace like this will teach MS a lesson. Maybe they will go back to the drawing board and think more carefully about what they are doing and start to produce some great stuff to change their brand image

nope, PC's still vastly outnumber the tablet market. In fact, tablets in their initial concept form are almost dead by now. Even the smartphone market has became somewhat stagnant, and due to gaming, PCs have re-gained some share.

Ballmer was right with this one. Tablets have failed to overtake laptops for pro work. Tablet computers is a stagnant market. Tablets are now primarily used for watching shows while in bed and to keep your kids busy.

Again - another moronic comment. The tablet form factor is doing very well when applied to exactly the job sectors that require a tablet. Tablets have now supplanted clipboards, are used for medical applications and for on the go graphics design / photo editing etc.
