DOS Memory Configuration-- my favorite all-time puzzle game! I watched this, and then I walked through the article you linked to and applied what was new. I eeked out another 2K of conventional memory! So, with sound (SB-16), CD-ROM, mouse, and doskey, I have 617K conv. free (using UMBs and supporting EMS), and 603K conv. free (without UMBs or EMS-- for Wing Commander III only). :D

It's a steep leaning curve for me as I never learned how it worked when I was younger. But that guide I found online was really handy to configure the settings. Glad to hear you managed to get some extra convectional memory freed up. It can be a pain for some of those older games

@@thesmokingcap Yes it can! I think Wing Commander II was the worst. 587K if you want voice, if you can believe that! Once I got past that I kept going because I enjoyed the challenge. :) It was easier for me, though, because I didn't have to run a lot of what you're running. For instance, I use a CF card, so I don't need smartdrv at all. There are another couple of memory ranges you could test out with EMM386 if you wanted to, though YMMV. I didn't end up using them because although they were free and did work for me, it turned out Norton Desktop tried to use the same regions (sneaky buggers) and it caused all kinds of problems. Depending on what you're running they may work for you though: BC00-BFFF (Space between CGA video RAM and graphics card ROM) and E800-EFFF (*Possibly* unused BIOS option ROM space). Of course, always be cautious when following the advice of strangers on the Internet. :D

Although we might think of DOS as primitve by today's standards, it forces you to stop and think about things like memory management, drivers and programs and these are basic areas of knowledge that most people don't even know about with more modern computing where everything's done for you.

Very true. It's something I haven't really learned until now. But when stuff doesn't work you have to cover all the bases. Would have been quite the time supporting this back in the day

I rebuilt old computers and used DOS as a kid and teenager. Not sure what I was doing, but I just did it and it eventually worked. You know, like setting up the VCR.

Haha yeah it somehow works out in the end. Also trying to set the clock on those VCRs was a event in itself sometimes. I've been enjoying learning more about these old computers

@@thesmokingcap Yeah, it's good stuff; hands-on tinkering with classic PCs. I missed out on the 486 era somewhat, but at the time technology was progressing so quickly. I think I went from a 286 or 386 to a Pentium II by the time I could afford to actually buy new components. The oldest stuff I would mess with used 8086s. Anyway, thanks for the refresher.

I am a DOS hobby programmer and most times i use only a very few DOS drivers like the XMS himem.sys memory driver, but not the EMS emm386.exe memory driver that stop me to use the 16 bit Big Real Mode with a 4 gb segment size for the data segment example for to write directly into the linear framebuffer located in the 4th gb. I do not use a display driver or a keyboard driver. I like to get the key press directly polling from the keyboard controller to have a full control which key we can use. For PS2 mouse i use my own mouse handler similar like the cutemouse driver, but without to use a driver.

Ahh yes. How is the software compatibility with xms in use? I've been learning how to manage memory better as in the past I used memmaker

@@thesmokingcap Most applications use EMS memory to put driver and a part of DOS into the high memory to get more main memory, but there are some application that can use the XMS memory too like a ram disk driver for XMS memory. But some of my applications use only the 16 bit Big Real Mode to write directly into the memory addresses above the first mega byte. For to play games the memmaker do a great job to put the driver together.
