VFR flight from Tri-Cities airport TN over to Elk River in NC.
Not a great day to be flying in the mountains with the winds.
Low approach to Rwy 30 to see what the winds were doing. No weather station at Elk River, and the nearest station is a few miles away.
As luck would have it the winds were straight down the Rwy so that made things easier.
Never the less, the Rwy in both directions slops down making it more difficult to land in heavy winds, not to mention the low altitude turbulence, wind shear and mountain waves buffeting the aircraft around like a rag doll! Sheesh!
I would definitely not be flying to Elk River IRL on a day like to day!
The chances of an accelerated stall due to low level wind shear and abrupted control inputs goes way up in this kind of wind. And not only in pitch control, but probably more importantly in roll control. The two types of stability that aircraft are engineered around, that being "Static and Dynamic stability" aircraft tend to be far more stabile in pitch control rather than roll control. The sudden deflection of the ailerons to control roll could result in the wing tip to stall first rather than the wing root causing a sudden loss of lift at the wing tip rolling the aircraft opposite of the control input. (e.g. trying to roll left, but the wing stalls on the right near the wing tip at the ailerons forcing the aircraft to roll to the right rather than left, this can be deadly at low altitudes.)
And the mountain waves can be as well.
Hope you enjoy the video!
MSFS is a great low cost supplement to polish up on the old flying skills.
Knocking off the rust would require an actual flight no doubt. Never the less, its fun in MSFS
Thanks for watching!
