Cant wait!... I was at that show, the final of the tour, July 29, 1973... I was also at the June 14, 1972 show in NY a couple weeks before the How the West Was Won recordings were done in LA.... Interesting thing is back then when I was 15, I was disappointed somewhat with the '73 show because Plant at that point could not hit the really high stuff like he did the year before... really bugged me that it didnt sound like the records.... my favorite years for Zeppelin will always be '68 to '72, but of course as I got older I came to love everything about '73 as well and give Plant credit for muscling through even though he was constantly dealing with his ever changing and weakening vocal chords due to all those years of abuse!... '73 in many ways is Zep at their creative best!

@@malcshone4409 I certainly did hear him in 75 I saw Zeppelin in 72, 73, 75 and twice in 77 and I’m fully aware of how much Robert sucked in 75. In fact, when I was there in 73 I was disappointed because he couldn’t hit the highs that he was hitting in 72 and earlier. I’ve since come to appreciate and love 73 because he was still giving it his all with his limited range. I’ve never heard anybody’s voice change as dramatically as his did literally through every year from 68 to 80. My favorite for Robert Plant is 70 and 71, although I love 68, 69 and 72 as well lol.

@@EdA1 By 1973 his voice was being “ augmented “ or “ enhanced” by taped sound effects, on Black Dog, D&C and WLL. It’s pretty obvious when you look /listen closely to those songs on TSRTS film. By 1975 he sounds awful on any of the live versions of older songs like Rock n Roll or Over The Hills or SIBLY. He’s ok ( ish) on the songs from Physical Graffiti ( with a lot of “ enhancement effects on Kashmir ) as his voice had already changed when they recorded that album. Saw them at Knebworth in England August 1979 and he was as shaky as hell until about an hour in to the show. Jimmy was even worse and failed on most of his solos. Sad and very disappointing.
@EdA1
Жыл бұрын
@@malcshone4409 agreed. Although physical graffiti had great moments and every one of their albums after that had some good moments, the real magic of Zeppelin both in the studio and live ended for me in ‘73. By ‘77 they were somewhat becoming a parody of themselves. The bullfight cheers, every time Page would play a fast lick were silly. Not only was the playing ability declining they were becoming too aware of themselves. ‘73 to me was the last year that Jimmy really got lost in his playing, closed his eyes and just took it to another place.

@@EdA1 The length of live performances of D&C , NQ and MD had become tedious for sure. The set lit for USA 1977 meant that Plant had almost nothing to do for maybe 45 minutes. People used to drift out of the hall to the bars and rest rooms. Jimmy was, at best, erratic in 1977 and clearly declined from his peak of 1971-75.

For the better part of 25+ years, this was the only legal video record of Zeppelin that fans had. You could only see it in theaters, many of which ran it on Saturday nights for years and years. You'd go out with your friends on Saturday nights, have a good time, then hit the theater for the midnight show. BTW: many of the shirts Plant wore at concerts with his open chest were actually the blouses of groupies he bedded the night before.

You're raving more over this than the PF Animals album - so if you want LIVE PF, try their PULSE concert at Earl's Court - I don't memorise the year, but it was in their golden years (think Roger had left and didn't make a guest appearance for that - but may be wrong. A lot of bands, back in the day, were better live. There are many bands who were great and made a good living touring, but just couldn't get the excitement and dynamism down on vinyl. Jimmy et al had done a lot of session work to pay the bills and knew how to get it down. When the OPEC oil crisis hit in the 1970s, the price of vinyl went up and record companies got the idea of doing live albums to save money. And those bands got their chance.

A great follow up / companion piece to this after you listen to the next couple of albums is the '75 tour - first 4 songs to see how they evolved from this tour. The obvious example is Earls Court as it is pro shot and multi-tracked, but I'd also suggest the boot from March 21st, Seattle as it is one of their best performances of '75 (of which their were many) and the bootleg is of exceptionally good quality.

Afterwards, my girlfriend and future wife saw them live in the Summer of 1977 at the Inglewood Forum in Los Angeles. Led Zeppelin of 1977 was not the Zep of 1973 as they had evolved again. Mike my good man I feel as though I should warn your good self and Dev that on Saturday evening is a big football event in England. At 19:00 GMT England are playing France in The World Cup quarter-final. Now this is a fairly big event here so I’m afraid it might clash with your Premiere of Maddison Square Garden release. I understand that it’s an hour before but as an Englishman in preparation we like to have a few ales beforehand. It softens the blow for when we get completely dismantled by a very good French team. Of course not all your viewers are English but I’m just excusing myself and others in case you are wondering where your English contingent are.
